Decatur is Officially a Bicycle Friendly Community!

Across the U.S. bicycling is on the rise, thanks in part to cities like Decatur taking steps to make riding safer and more comfortable for all residents. Today, the League of American Bicyclists announced the latest round of Bicycle Friendly Communities (BFC) and Decatur has been named a Bronze Level BFC!
“We are excited that the City of Decatur recognizes that simple steps to make biking safe and comfortable pay huge dividends in civic, community and economic development'” said League President Andy Clarke. “Bicycling is more than a practical, cost effective solution to many municipal challenges – it’s a way to make Decatur a place where people don’t just live and work, but thrive.”

Over the past several years, the City of Decatur has added bicycle lanes, bicycle racks, and sharrows. Two new bike stores have opened. and there are group bike rides that occur on a regular basis in Decatur. Bike Valet parking was added to the two major festivals, the Decatur Arts Festival and the Decatur Book Festival. Walking and riding bikes around the city has become more commonplace as people feel safer and more comfortable on their bikes.

Decatur Cyclist- as you well know, bike riders have to follow the traffic rules like the other vehicles. I also get frustrated waiting for a red light to change when my bike won’t trip the light, but hopefully one day we will be able to trip lights with our bikes. We are slowly but surely getting more bike friendly. It just takes time like everything else.
I hope you throw a party!! I heard someone had a quick celebration last Thursday night. If do throw something, please schedule it a couple weeks in advance. It is well deserved!

I am all for bike friendly. I am also for cyclists following the rules of the road. Most cyclists I see do not stop at stop signs or traffics lights and weave in and out of traffic up and down the sidewalk to the roadway, you get the picture. This is what angers drivers in vehicles. Everyone needs to follow the rules to make Decatur and Atlanta bike and car safe.
Thanks for your comment Adrianne. I think saying “most” cyclists don’t follow the rules is a bit of an exaggeration. I see many bicyclists followoing the rules. You are correct though, that there are some that do not. This makes the rest of us look bad. We will continue working on bicycle safety, and hopefully the car drivers will become more alert to cyclists and pedestrians on the road.
