Walk & Roll to School Day a Great Success!

Today was International Walk to School Day and the City of Decatur’s four elementary schools partnered with Decatur Active Living to participate. I had the pleasure of being at Glennwood Academy to greet the children as they arrived at school. There were over 86 children who rode their bikes today at Glennwood! Winnona Park, Clairemont and Oakhurst Elementary Schools all reported larger than ever numbers of children in their “walking school buses” and an increase in the number of children who rode their bikes to school.

Investigator Strawn & the School Crossing Guards

A special thanks goes to our School Crossing Guards who are there every morning and afternoon to ensure the safety of our children. Many thanks also to all the parents, teachers, principals, police officers and city employees who gave their time to make Walk to School Day safe and fun for the children.  Not only were they there early this morning to escort and greet the children, but also many attended the Pep Rally on the Square yesterday evening.

International Walk & Roll to School Day is part of the Safe Routes to School Program. Our four elementary schools hold Walk & Roll to School Days one day each month and will participate in Georgia Walk to School Day in March.
