Halloween Safety Tips

staff Halloween

The staff at Decatur Active Living and Children & Youth Services wishes you a fun and safe Halloween. Here are some safety tips to consider….

Walk Safely

Walk on sidewalks or paths whenever available.

Walk on the left side of the street if there are no sidewalks. Face the traffic.

Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.

Always look left, right, left before and while crossing the street.

Practice safe behavior when walking near traffic. No pushing, running, or shoving.

Don’t let toys, phones, other electronic devices or your trick-or-treat bags distract you while walking.

Beware of and stop at all driveways to make sure cars aren’t coming in or out.

Trick-or-Treat with an Adult

Children should not walk alone and should be supervised by an adult at all times. Trick-or-treating in groups is a good idea.

Costumes

Wear bright-colored costumes and reflective material.

Carry a flashlight if you are out at dusk or dark.

Drive with Caution

Eliminate any distractions in your car.

Turn your headlights on early to spot pedestrians and cyclists.

Slow down and be extra cautious when driving in residential areas.
Take extra time to look for children at medians, intersections and curbs.
