Beware of Thunderstorms

It seems that “Thunderston Season” is upon us in Decatur! Changing weather conditions are part of the outdoor experience, so advance planning and preparation will  help ensure that your outdoor active living activities are safe and enjoyable. Have your bad weather plans made in advance and monitor weather while outdoors.

  • Keep an eye out for signs of changing weather conditions such as cloud build-up.
  • Be aware of quick changes in temperature.
  • Pay attention to increasing winds.
  • At an early signs of a thunderstorm, stop your activites and be prepared to take protective action and seek shelter immediatley.
  • Thunderstorms can produce heavy precipitation, hail, lightning, high winds and tornadoes.
  • All thunderstorms are dangerous!
  • Most lightning deaths and injuries occur when people are caught outdoors in the summer months during the afternoon and evening.
  • Lightning often strikes outside of heavy rain and may occur as far as 10 miles away from any rainfall.
