Decatur Receives Walking Superstar Award

Walking Superstars-1

The City of Decatur was honored by PEDS at the 20 Years Strong – Salute the Walking Superstars Celebration held on January 26 at the Wrecking Bar.

Decatur was among four recipients of the new Walking Superstars Award and was recognized for “Activating the Streets” through  Transit Oriented Development in the downtown area, having places and activities worth walking to as well as people friendly public spaces and for our highly successful Safe Routes to School Program. These programs and similar projects that focus on encouraging healthy, active lifestyles and support walking, cycling and public transit represent our community’s 30 year commitment to Smart Growth principles.

Midtown Alliance, Micheal Dobbins and the Livable Centers Initiative were the other recipients. Click here for more information on PEDS.

Decatur is also a Silver level Walk Friendly Community. For more information on walking in Decatur, visit www.decaturga.com/walking.

We posted these a while back, but believe they are worth repeating. I have been walking a lot and think we all need to learn to “share” the road with each other. Car drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians….let’s all follow the rules and make it easier to share.

If I could add a #6 it would be: Turn off the cell phone while on the road!
