PEDS is accepting applications for an Outreach Coordinator to help implement our Safe Routes for Seniors initiative.

This job provides someone with at least one year of training in Public Health or community education to apply their skills toward encouraging increased walking.

Responsibilities include:

  • Organizing workshops, listening sessions and walking audits
  • Recruiting program participants
  • Enabling volunteers in selected communities to become effective safety pedestrian safety advocates
  • Helping communities organize and sustain successful walking clubs

Hours: 10 – 15 hours per week. Flexible hours

Pay: $12 – $13 / hour, depending on qualifications.

Decatur Receives Walking Superstar Award

The City of Decatur was honored by PEDS at the 20 Years Strong – Salute the Walking Superstars Celebration held on January 26 at the Wrecking Bar.

Decatur was among four recipients of the new Walking Superstars Award and was recognized for “Activating the Streets” through  Transit Oriented Development in the downtown area, having places and activities worth walking to as well as people friendly public spaces and for our highly successful Safe Routes to School Program. These programs and similar projects that focus on encouraging healthy, active lifestyles and support walking, cycling and public transit represent our community’s 30 year commitment to Smart Growth principles.
