The renovated Decatur Recreation Center was officially opened this morning at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Mayor Jim Baskett was on hand to say a few words about the renovation and cut the ribbon with the help of Mayor Pro Tem Kecia Cunningham and Commissioner Patti Garrett.
Mayor Baskett also announced that the gymnasium would be dedicated to former Mayor Bill Floyd and affectionately called “The Bill”. Members of the Decatur softball team were on hand to unfurl the banner.
Tours have been offered throughout the day and hundreds of community members were on hand to celebrate the opening and see the improvements to the building. It’s not too late – we have one more tour offered this evening at 7 pm. Stop by and check out the renovated meeting rooms, the great new multi-purpose studio, the new administrative suite and more.
Be sure to notice the paneling on the walls and the ceiling of the lobby area which were made out of the old bleachers. The old gym floor was repurposed into many tables found on the main level.
We look forward to serving the community in our newly renovated building!

Please bear with us next week as there may be some telephone and internet outages as we transition back.
Animal Crackers and regular Active Living programming will continue at Beacon Hill Center through the end of January while the gym and multi-use studio floors are completed and the final touches are added to the building.
Programming will move back to Decatur Recreation Center beginning February 4th. However, the lobby area and front desk will be open during January to serve you. Drop by to register or pay for classes, or to pick up information.
We look forward to having the publci back in the building and will be holding an open house later this Winter.
Stay tuned for updates and have a very happy and safe New Year!

The Decatur Recreation Center is about to undergo a huge renovation and we are packing up to begin our move this coming Monday, May 23rd to Beacon Hill. The “temporary” Rec Center will be located in the old Theatre Decatur space at Beacon Hill, right behind the Decatur Police Station. The new address is 430 W. Trinity Place and the entrance is on the rear of the building.
While we move our technology on Monday morning, the phone lines will be down for about an hour. After that, all registration for camps, sports, etc. will be at the new location. If you try to call and can’t reach us, just leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as we are online again.
After-school, exercise classes and other regular programming will continue at the present location until school is out on Friday, May 27th, then all summer camps and regular Rec Center activities will be at Beacon Hill.
We look forward to serving the community in our temporary location!
