How an orange umbrella helps you stay active…

This sunny, lightweight, walking-cane style orange umbrella is making the rounds. Seen weekly on Wednesdays at 11am for Walk With a Doc, it provides shade or cover from light rain and it offers a prop for those wary of uneven footing or with balance issues. At the Atlanta BeltLine lantern parade, it was illuminated and seen walking to and fro along the 2.5 mile parade route with 10,000 other home-crafted lanterns in the cool of the evening. At the Chattahoochee River on a rainy day, it offered shelter from a light drizzle and a doubled as a hiking stick for the hike back up from the river. And seen here in the gymnasium, it invites you to come give it a whirl and stay active with us!

Keep an eye out for it and see if you can catch a photo of the orange Be Active Decatur umbrella. Tag you’re it!

Looks Like a Good Weekend to Play Outside!

Wow! We may actually have a nice weekend without rain! So what are YOU going to do?

11227682_0f70b4e1d9

Here are some suggestions:

  • Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy an afternoon at one of Decatur’s greenspaces or parks.
  • Walk the trails at Hidden Cove Park or Glenn Creek Nature Preserve
  • Stroll through Woodlands Garden any day during daylight hours.
  • Take a ride or stroll through Decatur Cemetery. Follow the walking tour map to discover the history there. Maps are available here or stop by the Decatur Visitor’s Center to pick one up.
  • Play tennis.

Saturday:
Decatur Bikes leads a casual, no drop ride to Stone Mountain. Meet in the CVS parking lot at 8 am. Good group of folks and they will not leave you in the dust. Trust me- they were patient and waited for me.

Sam’s Freight Room Ride, 2 pm. Meet across from the Old Train Depot on West Howard STreet. A no-drop ride through Avondale, Oakhurst and Decatur. Refreshments at a local watering hole after the ride.

Sunday:
Sunday in the Garden at Woodlands, 2 -4 pm. Stroll through the gardens and listen to music at the pavilion. Nice way to escape without having to actually leave Decatur! Consider walking or biking over as parking is limited. You can also park at Westchester and stroll over from there.

Table Tennis at Decatur Recreation Center, 10 am – 1 pm. Free to residents, $2 for non-residents. All levels are welcome.

Indoor Soccer at the Recreation Center, 3:15 – 5:15 pm. Free to residents.

Whatever you do, stay active in Decatur!!

Hula hoops create a healthy appetite at Red Hatters’ and Active Adults meet up

1084033_10102389462320200_410730343_o
Lisa Shaw and her hula hoops class from the Dekalb Medical Wellness Center performed 3 routines to music including Elvis and others at the Solarium July 30. Then the real fun started as the ladies of the Decatur Red Hatter’s Society, charter #37159, joined in and showed off their hooping skills. Many ladies recalled how to hoop and several learned for the first time. Reggie Howze, leader of our twice weekly Stridewalkers fitness and nutrition class at Decatur Rec Center cooled them down with some hip stretches and got all the joints moving. These active living moments are brief but they work if you include them in the fun every day. All that activity worked up an appetite for a healthy delicious local meal from Saba Restaurant of Tuscan Chicken Pasta, Zucchini & Carrot Lasagna, Caesar and Mixed green salads. Thanks to the Solarium in Oakhurst for hosting us this month. And join us anytime at the Decatur Recreation Center, (home of the Active Living team) as we meet monthly for both a Red Hatters Society meeting on the last Tuesday each month AND the Active Adults Club on the first Thursday

Walking for Healthy Weight

Walking is a great way to manage weight for life. Studies show that fitness, more than fatness, is a strong indicator of longevity and well-being. When you exercise regularly, eat properly, manage stress, and enjoy the support of friends and family, your weight will find its natural, healthy point. Studies show that taking 12,000 to 15,000 steps per day helps people to achieve and keep healthy weight levels.

  • Plan to walk at least four days a week.
  • Walk a minimum of 30 consecutive minutes. Work up to one hour if possible. If this is too much to begin with, start with 10 minute increments.
  • Increase the intensity of your walk as you become more fit.

Bonus: Toning muscles also increases the muscle mass and raises your metabolism, or the amount of calories you burn at rest!

Information from “The Walking Deck” by Shirley Archer.

Too hot to walk outside? The renovated Decatur Recreation Center has an indoor elevated walking track. It’s free and open during regular operating hours.
