healthy monday headerMany community centers, schools, offices, universities and places of worship offer free or low-cost classes, intramural sports and gym memberships. These resources are an excellent way to meet people, try something new and fit fun activity into your routine.   Search your local newspaper, newsletters, bulletin boards and parks guides this week for a fun event that you can add to your schedule. Try a new activity and you may discover a great way to get moving!

The Fall issue will be out early September and will feature 30+ new and returning classes including Yoga, Aerobic Exercise, Baby Boot Camp, Senior Aerobics, Zumba, Watercolor and Tea, Nia Dance, Internet for Seniors, CApoeira for Women, and much, much more.

Children’s Arts Festival Tomorrow at Decatur Recreation Center

DSCN3702The Children’s Arts Festival kicks off tomorrow with a parade- line up begins at 9:30 am at the corner of Commerce and Church Street. Step off is at 9:50 am. Dress up the children and decorate your strollers, bike and trikes. Show your artistic spirit!

After the parade, enjoy arts and crafts, music, juggling, clowns and much more. Commemorate the fun by visiting the WOW photo booth. Most activities are free or for a small donation.

The Children’s Festival is from 10 am until 2 pm at the Decatur Recreation Center located at 231 Sycamore Street, next to the Decatur Library. We will also be hosting the New Dance festival, so drop in while you are here.

After the Children’s Festival, head on over to the Historic Decatur Square for music, art, literary arts and more.

Decatur Will Host Georgia Cornhole Championship!

Decatur Active Living has partnered with the DeKalb Convention and Visitors Bureau and American Cornhole LLC to bring the Georgia State Championship of Cornhole to Decatur on June 13 and 14. On Friday, June 13 the event will be held on the MARTA Plaza and Saturday’s Championship games will be held in the Decatur Recreation Center gymnasium.

Decatur Recreation Center Cancellations and Closings: Update

Tuesday, February 11: Decatur Recreation Center will close today at 5 pm. All programming, athletics and classes are cancelled today.

Wednesday, February 12:  The center will be closed and all programming, athletics and classes will be cncelled.

Recreation Center Opens at Noon on Thursday

rec ctrDue to icy roads in the morning, the Decatur Recreation Center will open tomorrow at noon. All evening classes and activities will be cancelled. The center will close early.

Glenlake Tennis will remain closed today due to ice on the tennis courts.

The roads are icy so we are closing the Decatur Recreation Center today, Wednesday, January 29th. We hope to reopen first thing tomorrow. Check back here for updates.

Decatur Recreation Center Closings and Cancellations


Due to the threat of inclement weather, the Decatur Recreation Center will close early today at 5 pm.

Tonight’s youth basketball practice as well as afternoon and evening classes at the Decatur Recreation Center are cancelled.

Wednesday morning classes and activities at the Recreation Center will be cancelled until noon. Please check back here for the latest updates.

Snow is expected to begin falling this afternoon, and roads are expected to freeze. State routes will be the priority for road crews clearing streets, followed by major city streets. Residential streets will be the last to be cleared. City of Decatur residents are encouraged to clear the sidewalks in front of their property.

Thursday garbage and recycling pick up may be delayed, depending on road conditions. Please check back here for updates.
