Decatur Table Tennis “Champs”

From Charlie Slater, leader of Decatur Table Tennis:

I would have to say today’s “friendly tournament” was a total success. Twenty of us competed for absolutely nothing except the thrill of victory or the gracious acceptance of defeat. We did a round robin format, so everyone had at least 4 matches. Our winner was Steve Jackson (he’s on the right in the picture) and second place went to Parker Robbins (he’s on the left). Be sure to congratulate them when you see them…just don’t ask to see their trophies. Ha, ha! (Maybe that will happen in future tourneys.)

Interested in joining the table tennis group? They play at Decatur Recreation Center on Thursdays from 7 to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.  Free to Decatur residents and only $2 for non-residents. All levels of players are welcome!

We would like to invite you to join us for a special Summer Camp Sneak Preview on Tuesday, January 26 from 6:30 pm-7:30 pm at Decatur Recreation Center.  Children and Youth Services and Active Living have some fabulous camps planned for Summer 2016 and we’d like to invite you to come out for a “sneak preview” before the full details are released on February 12.

The event will be child-friendly* and will include various hands-on activities so that you can get a taste of what’s to come this summer.  You will also have a chance to meet our Camp Directors for iDiscover Camp (Rashad Crowell, Ashton Hudson, Kiara Smith and Rebecca Aulph), Camp Sycamore (Lartesha Chaney and Danielle Perry), as well as our Special Interest Camp Coordinators (Renae Madison and Caudieu Cook with Enrichment Camps and Portia Langley with Sports Camps). * All children must be accompanied by a parent.

  • All campers must be 5 years of age by the first day of camp to attend any camp listed for rising Kindergarteners
  • CYS will offer camps seven weeks from June 6-July 22 this summer (iDiscover, Camp Sycamore, and Special Interest Enrichment Camps) and Active Living will offer Tennis, Aquatics and Sports Special Interest Camps May 31-July 29 (nine weeks)
  • All grade levels for camp registration are RISING grade levels or FALL 2016 grade levels. Example: This means that a current second grader may attend camps listed for 3rd graders but may not attend camps listed for K-2nd
  • The forms completion process for camp will be electronic using an online forms platform that allows for electronic signatures.  Links to forms will be available the week of March 1.

We look forward to seeing you at Decatur Recreation Center on  January 26 at our Camp Sneak Preview!

Happy Holidays at Decatur Recreation Center

Girl Scout Troop 28433 has decorated a Christmas tree at Decatur Recreation Center for eight years, and each year the decorations are better than ever!  We appreciate these young ladies, who we have watched grow up, sharing holiday cheer with the community.  We also love their creativity creating new ornaments each year. Thank you ladies!!

Enjoy some of the photos and come on by and see not only the tree the Girl Scouts adorned, but the other decor our staff worked on. And of course, glance up before you enter the building to see the “snow family.”

Great Time to Try Good Measure Meals

Our good friends at @goodmeasuremeals are launching some new fall yums!  I hear whole wheat pumpkin bread is on the menu.  Use the code above to get a discount on healthy meals you can pick up at the Decatur Rec Center and don’t worry about cooking next week.

I have tried these, and they are fresh, not frozen and taste very good. (And I am a picky eater!)
