Over the holiday break, our Youth and Teens Programs were able to give gifts to over 60 families in the community. A massive THANK YOU to Wal-Mart, Thumbs Up Diner, and Southwest DeKalb High School for graciously donating and putting smiles on our kids faces. We are always so grateful for our rockstar staff for exceeding expectations and ensuring that we are providing the best services for our community.

CYS and Active Living partnered to have some of our summer campers write their community poem for NRPA’s Parks & Recreation Month. Each poem began with “Everything Around You Is…” All poems were submitted to NRPA for bestselling author, Kwame Alexander. He’ll create one bigger poem from tidbits of each poem, phrase, or meaningful thoughts.
Here’s Ruth Porter’s (Summer Camp attendee) poem:
“Everything around you is beautiful, calm, and serene. Fresh, pristine, and certainly clean. The people are kind. 70% fun, 2% boring, 18% work, and 10% HOT! That is camp!”

Take a stroll along the story walk in McKoy Park to read, Busy-Eyed Day, by Anne Marie Pace. An excerpt from the book reads,
“See the world through fresh eyes with this lush and lyrical picture book. There are so many intriguing eyes out in the world…and so many amazing things for those eyes to see! From a big-eyed bug and a stalk-eyed slug to a side-eyed frog and a wide-eyed dog, the family in this book doesn’t miss a single sight during their busy-eyed day the park. This rhyming and richly illustrated picture book is a clever and unusual celebration of being observant and keeping an eye out for magic in the everyday world that surrounds us.”
The Busy-Eyed Day Story Walk is presented in partnership with DeKalb County Library. #ourparkandrecstory
