GA Rides to the Capitol This Morning

GA Rides to the Capitol is this morning and riders will depart from the East Lake MARTA Station at 10:45am.  Come join the ride, or be there to cheer the riders on. Mayors from cities throughout the metro area will join Mayor Bill Floyd and Commissioner Boykin on the ride.  Lt. Gov. Casey is also expected to ride from Decatur (always subject to last minute changes).

PushPush Theater Offers Summer Camps

PushPush Theater, located in East Decatur Station, is currently accepting enrollment for their June and July summer theater camps.  The camps will focus on a classic text and will use theater, film and improv to enhance participants’ imagination, communication, confidence and collaboration skills.  To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Tennessee Williams, this year’s program will include an adaptation of one of his classic works.  Each camp will culminate in a lively public performance.

Camps will be held June 13 – July 1, and again  July 11 – July 29.
Ages:  8 – 12 and Teens 13+ (participating separately)

Walk the Labyrinth April 5th – 7th at First Baptist Church of Decatur

First Baptist Church of Decatur invites you to “Walk the Labyrinth”. The portable labyrinth belonging to Piedmont Hospital will be at First Baptist Decatur (corner of Clairemont and Commerce) from 8 am-7 pm, Tuesday to Thursday, April 5-7 for anyone who would like to walk and meditate. Enter through the church office on the right side of the building, go straight down the hall and turn left at the welcome banner. The labyrinth will be in Carreker Hall.

Join the Ride to the Capitol

Join Mayor Bill Floyd and Commissioner Fred Boykin on Tuesday, March 22 on their “Ride to the Capitol”. The Metro Atlanta Mayors Association will co-sponsor the 6th annual “Georgia Rides to the Capitol” event to raise support for the development of a regional scale bicycle network of both on-road facilities and multi-use trails, and cycling connections focused around major transit facilities, activity centers and schools.

Many metro mayors will join Mayor Floyd and Commissioner Boykin for the free ride leaving from the East Lake MARTA Station in Decatur at 10:45 am.

25 Healthy Snacks for Children

Food and Nutrition Tips from the American Dietetic Association:

1.    Peel a banana and dip it in yogurt. Roll in crushed cereal and freeze.
2.    Spread celery sticks with peanut butter or low-fat cream cheese. Top with raisins. Enjoy your “ants on a log”.
3.    Stuff a whole grain pita picket with ricotta cheese and Granny Smith apple slices. Add a dash of cinnamon.
4.    Mix together ready-to-eat cereal, dried fruit and nuts in a sandwich bag for an on-the-go snack.
5.    Smear a scoop of frozen yogurt on two graham crackers and add sliced banana to make a yummy sandwich.
6.    Top low-fat- vanilla yogurt with crunchy granola and sprinkle with blueberries.
7.    Microwave a small baked potato and top with reduced-fat cheddar cheese and salsa.
8.    Make snack kabobs. Put cubes of low-fat cheese and grapes on pretzel sticks.
9.    Toast a whole grain waffle and top with low-fat yogurt and sliced peaches.
10.  Spread peanut butter on apple slices.
11.   Blend low-fat  milk, frozen strawberries and a banana for thirty seconds for a delicious smoothie.
12.  Make a mini-sandwich with tuna or egg salad on a dinner roll.
13.  Sprinkle grated Monterey Jack cheese over a corn tortilla- fold in half and microwave for twenty seconds. Top     with salsa.
14.  Toss dried cranberries and chopped walnuts in instant oatmeal.
15.  Mix together peanut butter and cornflakes in a bowl; Shape into balls and roll in crushed graham crackers.
16.  Microwave a cup of tomato or vegetable soup and enjoy with whole grain crackers.
17.  Fill a waffle cone with cut-up fruit and top with low-fat vanilla yogurt.
18.  Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on hot popcorn.
19.  Banana Split: top a banana with low-fat vanilla and strawberry frozen yogurt. Sprinkle with whole-grain cereal.
20.  Sandwich cut outs: make a sandwich on whole grain bread. Cut out your favorite shape using a cookie cutter. Eat the fun shape and the edges too.
21.  Spread mustard on a flour tortilla. Top with a slice of turkey or ham, low-fat cheese and lettuce, then roll it up.
22.  Mini Pizza: Toast an English Muffin, drizzle with pizza sauce and sprinkle with low-fat mozzarella.
23.  Rocky Road: Break a graham cracker into bite size pieces. Add to low-fat chocolate pudding along with a few miniature marshmallows.
24.  Inside-Out Sandwich: Spread mustard on a slice of deli turkey. Wrap around a sesame breadstick.
25.  Parfait: Layer vanilla yogurt and mandarin oranges or blueberries in a tall glass. Top with a sprinkle of granola.

Run Tour deCatur on March 26th

 The Decatur Active Living Department has a $100.00 Decatur Bucks gift card for one lucky member of Team Decatur. Only Tour deCatur participants wearing their Team Decatur t-shirts will be eligible for the drawing. Decatur Active Living will have a Team Decatur box and index cards at one of the registration tables. Put your name on a card and drop it in the box. We will draw a name during the awards ceremony after the 5K run/walk.

The Tour deCatur 5K (3.1 mile) Run/Walk event begins in front of Decatur High School at 9:15 AM on Saturday, March 26.  This is the second qualifying event in the Team Decatur Grand Slam Fitness Challenge.  Participate in this event, the KP Corporate Run/Walk in September, and two of the three remaining Decatur-based 5K run/walk events and you win the Grand Slam Fitness Challenge.
