Volunteer at the Oakhurst Hydration Station for the Publix Marathon

thThe City of Decatur hosts TWO hydration stations for the Publix Marathon. The Oakhurst Station is still in need of a lot of volunteers. Be the first group to greet the runners as they enter our city at mile marker 11!

This station is on College Avenue in Oakhurst – right under the overpass for the East Lake Marta station.

The race is March 17th (Sunday), and you would be volunteering for a segment of time from about 6:30 am until 10:30 am, or any portion of that time you can commit to.  Your duties would be to prepare tables with cups of water and PowerAde and hand them out as the runners pass, to help clean up and to CHEER!!!!

CHILDREN ARE WELCOME AND ENCOURAGED TO HELP!  Our boys have been helping since Sterling was in 1st grade and Auguste was in 3rd grade, and the runners love to see the children cheering them on.

Please help if you can!  The instructions for registering as a volunteer are as follows, but remember you gotta go on-line to register, since we are supposed to have a certain number of volunteers or the organizers start to panic.  Also, this ensures you get a free t-shirt!

Access the Group Volunteer Registration page directly from the following link:

http://www.doitsports.com/volunteer/join-protected-group.tcl?event_id=174848

Once on the group page, select Decatur/Oakhurst from the drop down menu. The password is do11 (case sensitive; use lower case).  This is Hydration Station #7 at College and Mead.   Complete the online registration form.  You will receive a confirmation email indicating you have signed up with your group.  Your group leader will contact you before the event with information and instruction.

Thanks for considering volunteering!!

Cheer For The Marathon Runners This Sunday

The Publix Marathon will be coming through the City of Decatur this Sunday morning. Runners will reach the city limits at approximately 8am. Join us at the Cheering Station on Ponce de Leon in front of the Old Courthouse or at Fellini’s to cheer them on. We want to win the Neighborhood Challenge – prize money will benefit the Decatur Youth Fund.

Be sure to wear “Publix Green” and bring something to make noise with. The city has a limited number of Thunder Sticks and Hand Clappers, so get there early to claim one. There will be music at both locations, so come on out, have some fun, and cheer on those runners!

Hydration Station Volunteers

Volunteer to Help With Marathon Water Station – It’s Loads of Fun!

Active Living Board Member Michael Harbin wants you!

“This year’s Publix Georgia Marathon will be held on Sunday, March 18th. Several thousand marathon runners will pass through downtown Decatur and once again we will greet them with water and Gatorade at the mile-13 “Downtown Decatur Hydration Station” across from the newly renovated Courtyard by Marriott hotel on Clairemont.  We need 35 volunteers to put this together.

Last year we were voted by the runners as the best waterstation on the marathon course. Once again we have an opportunity to win $1000 for the non-profit of our choice engaged in promoting physical fitness. More than that we have an opportunity to have fun, promote Decatur and cheer on the brave souls participating in this marathon as they pass the halfway mark on their 26.2 mile Sunday morning trek.” Interested? Access the Group Volunteer Registration page here.

Once on the page, select City of Decatur from the drop down menu. It will ask for a password: use cd11. Complete the form and you will receive a confirmation email. Your group leader will contact you before the event with information and instructions.  For more information, contact Michael Harbin, mharbin9@gmail.com.

Join us - runners love treats almost as much as I do!

Congratulations to our Winning Water Station!

As you may know, the City of Decatur hosts two water stations for the Publix Marathon. Thanks to our wonderful volunteers Laura Moore and Michael Harbin for coordinating these each year. I am not sure how they do it, but they convince a lot of their friends and neighbors to get up before dawn on Sunday morning to hand out water and other refreshments to the runners.

This year, the Water Station in downtown Decatur won first place – voted on by the runners. Clay of FleetFeet organized a large group to join them and they handed out orange slices.

Way to go Decatur!

Clay and MIchael cheer the runners on!

Volunteer for East Lake Water Station for the Marathon

From Laura Moore- four year captain of the East Lake Water station for the Publix Marathon:

For the 4th year my family is heading up the water/Gatorade station at the 11 mile mark of the Georgia Marathon that passes through the City of Decatur.  We are at mile 11 – right across from the East Lake Marta station on College Avenue.

The date is Sunday, March 20th.  Volunteers have to be there at 7 a.m. (I know, that is early, but Auguste BEGS to get up each year to help me meet the supply truck at 5:30 a.m., which proves it is FUN!!!).  The last runner comes by at about 9:45, so you are usually done in plenty of time to go to church!

I got a late start this year staffing my station and could use your help!  Please consider signing yourself and your family members up!  You get a cool t-shirt and a lot of memories!

 Here is how:

Go to http://doitsports.com/volunteer/join-protected-group.tcl?event_id=174848

In the drop-down menu pick Decatur/Oakhurst

Enter do11 as the password

Fill out all of the info you are asked – voila!  You are done!
