The Adult Beginners Tennis Clinic Returns to Glenlake Tennis Center

Each year the City of Decatur Active Living Department offers 6-week adult beginner tennis clinics in an effort to bring the joys of tennis to more people in the community. Tennis is considered a life long activity because it is played by 6 year olds and 80 year olds alike. It offers one of the best full body workouts of any sports and is estimated to burn more calories per hour than every activity besides swimming. Jabari Cole at Glenlake Tennis Center has developed the 6 week course to instruct adults on the proper way to hit forehands, backhands, volley, and serves. The course also covers the basics of singles and doubles play. The first 6 week clinic for 2011 is scheduled to begin on Thursday, March 24, at 6pm. It will continue each Thursday at 6 until the course has been completed. The cost is $75 for City of Decatur Residents and $100 for non City of Decatur Residents. Space is limited so please contact Glenlake Tennis Center at 404-377-7231 to reserve your spot.

Make-A-Splash and the Learn to Swim Program are coming to Decatur

Justin Spears of the Atlanta Public School System will be spending the summer teaching swim lessons for the City of Decatur Active Living Department. He has created a program at MLK Middle School in Atlanta to teach under priveledged children how to swim. Not knowing how to swim is a public safety issue and the City of Decatur wants to ensure that lack of economic resources is not a barrier for children to learn to swim. Justin Spears has partnered with the Make-A-Splash foundation and will be bringing the Learn-to-Swim program to Ebster Pool in Decatur for low income youth. More information will be available in the months to come.

Volunteer for East Lake Water Station for the Marathon

From Laura Moore- four year captain of the East Lake Water station for the Publix Marathon:

For the 4th year my family is heading up the water/Gatorade station at the 11 mile mark of the Georgia Marathon that passes through the City of Decatur.  We are at mile 11 – right across from the East Lake Marta station on College Avenue.

The date is Sunday, March 20th.  Volunteers have to be there at 7 a.m. (I know, that is early, but Auguste BEGS to get up each year to help me meet the supply truck at 5:30 a.m., which proves it is FUN!!!).  The last runner comes by at about 9:45, so you are usually done in plenty of time to go to church!

I got a late start this year staffing my station and could use your help!  Please consider signing yourself and your family members up!  You get a cool t-shirt and a lot of memories!

Touch A Truck Rescheduled for April 30

Touch A Truck has been rescheduled for Saturday, April 30 due to the 100% chance of rain tomorrow. Public works had the trucks all cleaned and ready to go, so if you see them around next week you can comment on how clean we keep our trucks!

See you on April 30th from 10am until 1 pm.

Clairemont Elementary GA Walk to School Video

Parents at Clairemont Elementary produced a great video to show at GA Walk to School Day this past Wednesday. As promised we are providing a  link.

Congratulations to all of our elementary schools for their great participation!

Touch A Truck This Saturday

I have had a number of calls and emails asking about Touch A Truck this weekend and the predicted rain. It won’t rain! But, realistically, if it does, we will reschedule the event for April 30. We will make the “weather call” early Saturday morning, so check back here to see if it has been called on account of rain.

If it is not raining, join us at the Callaway Lot at the corner of Trinity Place and Commerce Drive from 10am until 1pm. We have a lot of cool trucks and other vehicles lined up: Fire trucks, police vehicles, a Bucket Truck, garbage trucks, street sweepers, a cement truck, a CCTV truck and more. Thanks to DeKalb County joining the City of Decatur to bring a wide variety of trucks, both little and big, to touch, climb on and honk horns.

The event is free to the community and parking is free in the County deck adjacent to the event.

Hope to see you on Saturday.
