School Opens Tomorrow: Be on the Lookout for Walking and Bicycling Children!

Decatur Schools open tomorrow.  There will be many children and their parents out and about walking and rolling to school. Let’s all slow down and keep our children safe.

Here’s the schedule for all the schools.

•             Pre-K at College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center, 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

•             K-3 at Oakhurst and Winnona Park Elementary Schools, 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

•             K-3 at Clairemont and Glennwood Elementary Schools, 8:10 a.m.-2:40 p.m.

•             4/5 Academy at Fifth Avenue, 7:45 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

•             Renfroe Middle School,  8:40 a.m.-3:40 p.m.

•             Decatur High School and Decatur Career Academy, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Remember that cars are to stop for pedestrians in mid-block crosswalks and remain stopped until the pedestrian has reached the curb.

Cyclists younger than 13 are allowed to ride on the sidewalks, so keep alert for children on bikes.

Safe Routes to School

Lisa Mauldin and Active Living Director Greg White

Everyone is getting ready for the start of the school year, including Decatur Public Works, Decatur Active Living and our Safe Routes to Schools volunteers. We have been working on making the walking and biking routes to school safer. In conjunction with the City Schools of Decatur, we are doing a pilot program with the new 4/5 Academy at 5th Avenue: marking the recommended safe routes with sidewalk markers. Look for crosswalks to be restriped and curb cut ramps to be installed around the city. A map of the recommended Safe Routes to School will be posted online at both the City Schools of Decatur and City of Decatur websites.
