Earth Day in Oakhurst Draws a Crowd

Mother Earth showed its colors with clear skies and fresh air. Earth Day in Oakhurst kicked off with the Seed and Feed Band performing and residents participating in a earth friendly parade (no cars).  The day was filled with music, earth freindly vendors,crafts, wonderful earth day cakes, sheep and birds of prey.  The event was planned and brought to the community by the following organizations: Latham Home Sanitation, City of Decatur Active Living, Green Umbrella, The Waldorf School of Atlanta, Oakhurst Community Garden Project, Pit Stop, Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool and Agnes Scott.  Pictured below are highlights from the Earth Dayevent.

Decatur Earth Day Festival, Sunday, April 17, 2011

Join us for the 41st anniversary of Earth Day and a great chance for members of the community to come together and participate at the city’s OFFICIAL Earth Day Party!  

The event is absolutely FREE!

 Location: Oakhurst Garden, 435 Oakview Road, Decatur, GA  30030
Time: 1-4 p.m.

Parade: Come as you are.  Dress up your bike. No cars please.  Or watch from the sides.  Line up starts at noon in downtown Oakhurst. If you are walking in the parade, join the group from noon-12:30 p.m. to claim your spot. Parade begins at 12:30 p.m. in Harmony Park (East Lake Drive/Oakview Road) and walks down Oakview Road to the Oakhurst Community Garden Project. 

 Kids Crafts: More than 15 crafts will be offered to the kids.  

 Vendors and Raptors!: More than 25 businesses and non-profits will be on hand.  Learn about a new organization or purchase a plant!

 Food Vendors: Popsicles, coffee, baked goods, sandwiches, and more yummy food

 Cake Contest:  We hope you are baking an Earth Themed cake!  All ages, no restrictions.  Drop off between 10 am.-noon at the Oakhurst Garden’s house, 435 Oakview Road, Decatur, GA  30030. Please leave your name, telephone number, and age.  Families, groups, and individuals are welcome to submit.  Judging occurs at 1 p.m., winners announced at 1:30ish from the stage,  and the cakes will be served to the public at 2 p.m.

 New this year is a Community Phone Book Recycling Project sponsored by PitStop. Bring your old phone books to fill up a portolet! Let’s see how many phone books we can fit in there! Your phone books will be used by Patterson Services to grind with clean wood and send the byproduct to Visy Paper.  Visy Paper uses what they receive from Patterson Services to produce bio fuel.

 Earth Day T-Shirt: Winner announced at 1:30 p.m. from the stage.  T-shirts for both kids and adults featuring the winning design are available for purchase.

 The 2011 The Sally Wylde Cultivating Life Award recipient will also be announced on the bandstand starting at 1:30 p.m.

The Earth Day event is offered free to the community by Latham Home Sanitation, the Oakhurst Community Garden Project, the City of Decatur, the City of Decatur Environmental Sustainability Board, the Waldorf School of Atlanta, Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool, Agnes Scott College, and PitStop.

 Parking:

Cars: If you are participating in the parade, please park your car at the Vision Properties parking lot in downtown Oakhurst.  You can also park along Oakview Road leading up to the Oakhurst Community Garden Project.

Bikes: We will have a bike parking tent available again this year behind the stage.

Cake Contest

Be sure to visit the annual Earth Day Festival to be held in the Oakhurst Community Garden this Sunday, April 17 from 1 until 4pm. The event begins with a Green Parade featuring the Seed & Feed Marching Abominables – meet at Harmony Park at 12:30pm and march to the Garden to kick off the festival. The event includes lots of fun crafts for the children, musical entertainment,  raptors, Cake Contest, plants for sale and more. Bring your old telephone books to recycle – we are going to see if we can fill up an empty portolet with them.

Oakhurst Community Garden Project Plant Sale

On Saturday April 9 and Sunday April 10 from 9am until 4 pm, be sure to stop by the Oakhurst Community Garden to stock up on your spring plants. Not only can you choose from 50 types of tomatoes, 30 types of peppers, 20 types of eggplant and a great variety of other summer vegetables, but there will be FREE garden related speakers both days. Learn about container gardening, fruit trees, square foot gardening, native plants and more.

Microscopes in the Garden

What a great way to spend a spring Saturday afternoon! Visit the Oakhurst Garden for Microscopes in the Garden -Saturday, April 2, 2-3:30pm -$10 members, $15 non members. Your child will  explore the garden with a digital microscope that zooms in up to 500 times! Discover the tiny secret world that lives under every leaf. Save Your Phone Books to Recycle at Earth Day

This year at Earth Day in the Oakhurst Garden you can recycle your old phone books! Thanks to sponsor PitStop, we will try to fill up an empty (and unused) portolet with old phone books for recycling.

This year’s Earth Day event will be held on Sunday, April 17th in the Oakhurst Community Garden located at 435 Oakview Road from 1 until 4 pm.

In addition to phone book recycling there will be hands on activities for the children, Earth-friendly folks in the community pavilion area, music and an Earth themed Cake Contest. You can even get a piece of cake after the judging and awards are given.

Join us for the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Parade: decorate your bike, wagon stroller or yourself and join in the fun. No motorized vehicles are allowed. Parade line up begins at 12:30pm at Harmony Park.

This year’s event is presented by Decatur’s Recycling Company, Latham Home  Recycling.

Chicks in the City Coming February 26

 The Oakhurst Community Garden Project invites the community to the Chicks in the City Symposium on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m at the Decatur Recreation Center.

 Topics include: Breeds and Where to Buy,Nutrition and Feed 101, Chicken First Aid,Coop Construction and Predator Proofing, and Chickens for food.

 We offer a variety of volunteer opportunites throughout the week. We now have a volunteer calendar to make it easy for you to see what days and times are convient for you to give service. Classes at the Oakhurst Community Garden

Is this the year you want to learn something new? Or maybe you are looking for a fun activity for a cold afternoon or evening. The Oakhurst Community Garden may have just the thing for you! The Garden offers a wide variety of classes, camps and workshops. Some of the upcoming January classes include Intro to Beekeeping on January 29, Introduction to Grafting on the 15th, Making Your Own Medicine on the 23rd, and Gluten Free Baking on January 30th. If you and your children want to learn together, the Garden offers a variety of Family classes: In January you can take Candle Making, Glass Valentine Hearts is offered in February, and  a class where you learn how to Make Valentine Treats for your Doggy Pal!

 

A Three Day Spring Arts Camp will be held on April 6-8 for ages 10 to Adult

 

Have you wanted to start a home garden and not sure where to begin? Check out classes like Plant Your First Spring Garden, held on February 9th, Let’s Grow Mushrooms on February 12th or The Basics of Growing Your Own Spring Seedlings on February 23rd.

My friends and I took a knitting class in December – something I have always wanted to learn to do. I might have my new scarf finished before the warm weather arrives this spring!
