In Memory of our City of Decatur Hometown Hero- Shirley Kendrick

Shirley Kendrick will be remembered as the resident with the big heart.  Shirley moved to Decatur in 1967 and served many roles in the community. She was the Cambridge Neighborhood Association President, assisted families with MARTA Cards, Christmas gifts, helped families in crisis and each Mother’s Day/Father’s Day she organized the community to take individuals with absentee family members to dinner.  She played a key role with Decatur Active Living operating the concession stand at Oakhurst, Decatur Recreation Center and McKoy since 1999. When there was little league game at Oakhurst you could count on her to have the concession up and running.  All proceeds she put back into the community with her Back to School Picnic at Oakhurst. Children in the community could get notebooks, paper, pencils, back packs and other school necessities.

In 2002 she was nominated as a Hometown Hero by Decatur Recreation and Community Services Department (presently known as Decatur Active Living).  People from all walks of life respect her ability to organize, problem solve and motivate others in the Decatur community.  Shirley thanks for serving Decatur and your legacy will always be remembered at Decatur Active Living.

    Mr. White,

On behalf of my family, thank you so very much for sharing how great my grandmother was. She is missed with each passing day. I’m so very proud of her and all the things she did for her community and family. She left behind some very hard shoes to fill, I must say. She is truly one of kind!!! May her memory continue to live on through us all. :0)

    God Bless,

    Shaun Bryant

And usually what winds up happening to us is we breakdown and choke up when we’re looking to express our thoughts and feelings. Remember, the point of your respective speech is driving a place home, while pulling an address together to ensure that it flows chronologically and logically.
