Congratulations to the winners of the Bike Safety Poster Contest sponsored by Decatur Active Living and Bicycle South. Winners’ posters will be displayed around town during May, which is National Bike Month. Be on the lookout and follow the safety tips!
May is National Bike Month and Decatur Safe Routes to School invites children in participating schools to enter Decatur’s second annual Bike to School Month poster contest.
We invite children in grades k – 8 to design a poster illustrating bike safety. For example, the poster could show a child using hand signals, or it could stress the importance of wearing a helmet. Creativity is encouraged!
A panel of judges will select four winners who will receive a gift certificate from Bicycle South, the contest sponsor. Judging will be based on creativity, inclusion of bike safety theme, and originality. Age and grade will play a factor in the judging. The winning posters will be made into posters to be displayed throughout the City during May. Winners will also be recognized at the City Commission meeting in May and poster art will be featured in the May Decatur FOCUS magazine.
Deadline is March 10. Entries are to be turned in at the student’s school by 3 pm.
For more information on how to enter and the registration form please visit decaturga.com/srts or contact Cheryl.Burnette@decaturga.com. Entry forms will also be available at each participating school.
Contest winners: Ethan Donald, Isaiah Guerrieri, Caroline Tusher and Cara Holecek
The winners of the very first Safe Routes to School Bike Safety Poster Contest presented their posters to the City Commission last evening. They were recognized by the Commissioners and awarded gift certificates by Brian Dunne, owner of Bicycle South who was the sponsor of the contest.
Be on the lookout for their bike safety reminders which will be posted around the City for National Bike Month. The posters are featured in the May Decatur FOCUS.
A BIG THANK YOU goes to the Fraternal Order of Police, DeKalb Lodge #10 for donating seven new bikes to Decatur Active Living. The bikes donated will be used to teach bike safety training to Decatur children. Here are five Rules of the Road from the League of American Bicyclists to prepare you for a safe and fun bike commute no matter where you are riding. // // // //
Follow the Law
Your safety and image of bicyclists depend on you. You have the same rights and duties as drivers. Obey traffic signals and stop signs. Ride with traffic; use the rightmost lane headed in the direction you are going.
Be Predictable
Make your intentions clear to everyone on the road. Ride in a straight line and don’t swerve between parked cars. Signal turns, and check behind you well before turning or changing lanes.
Be Conspicuous
Ride where people can see you and wear bright clothing. Use a front white light, red rear light and reflectors when visibility is poor. Make eye contact with others and don’t ride on sidewalks.
Think Ahead
Anticipate what drivers, pedestrians, and other people on bikes will do next. Watch for turning vehicles and ride outside the door zone of parked cars. Look out for debris, potholes, and other road hazards. Cross railroad tracks at right angles.
Ride Ready
Check that your tires have sufficient air, brakes are working, chain runs smoothly, and quick release levers are closed. Carry tools and supplies that are appropriate for your ride. Wear a helmet.
SLOW DOWN and watch for even more children than usual walking and biking to school on Wednesday!
Children in the City of Decatur will join millions of children worldwide by participating in International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 8, 2014.
Our schools will join other Georgia schools across the state that are participating in the event. International Walk to School Day is held each fall to remind students, parents, and communities about the many benefits of walking and biking to school. “No matter the reason: to improve students’ physical health, to teach pedestrian safety skills, to impact air quality, to build a stronger community, or to simply have fun, any school in Georgia can find a way to participate in this event ,” said Patti Sistrunk, Georgia Safe Routes to School Resource Center Manager. “It’s a great way to get the new school year started on the right ‘foot’!”
The City of Decatur has had an active, award winning SRTS program since 2005. The program won the 2008 Golden Shoe Award from PEDS for Pedestrian Friendly School System and the 2011 GRPA Publication Award. The Decatur SRTS program is managed by the Active Living Division with the help of the FABULOUS Parent Champions at each school.
