Third Friday Bike Ride is Friday, August 20

Join Decatur Active Living for this social-paced bike ride around Decatur neighborhoods. We bike approximately six miles and no-one will be left behind. Please wear a helmet and mask. This ride is not appropriate for children.

Meet in front of the Decatur Recreation Center and be ready to put wheels down at 6:30 pm.

Where Will YOU Ride Today?

IMG_2249We are enjoying riding our bikes for National Bike Month and finding new routes in Decatur. It has been so much fun riding through neighborhoods and seeing people out on their bikes. PLEASE – remember to keep physically distant and wear face masks if that is not possible.

Be sure to visit our Virtual Bike Month activities at decaturga.com/biking. Complete the checklist and receive a cooling bandanna with the I Bike Decatur logo. (You can use it as a mask too!) Enjoy cycling on some of routes we have enjoyed.

Some Bike Month ideas from The League of American Bicyclists:

    • Take a picture of yourself and your bike.
    • Go for a ride solo and take a picture – share it on social media and tag it #BikesUnite  (and of course, #ibikedecatur!)
    • Challenge your friends to a photo contest – who can take the best photo of their bike leaning next to a tree?
    • Take a selfie in front of your favorite small businesses to show support.
    • Watch  and share the League’s videos about how to gain confidence in your riding skills.

Walk Your Wheels on Downtown Sidewalks

IMG_0474You may have noticed these stencils on the sidewalks in the downtown area. Pedestrians and cyclists do not mix well on heavily used sidewalks. We have elderly folks, as well as lots of walking traffic. Be polite and Walk Your Wheels!

Riding on the Sidewalk

Riding on the sidewalk is not always the safest choice. When you are riding on the sidewalk, you also have to deal with many hazards: pedestrians, street furniture, signs, newspaper boxes, etc… These items don’t just make riding inconvenient; they also can make you invisible to drivers. It is also more difficult for cars to see you.

Please remember to be courteous and avoid bicycling on the sidewalks in the downtown Decatur pedestrian zone. The  sidewalk marking shown below designates those streets:

BFC_seal_templateThe City of Decatur has been renewed by the League of American Bicyclists as a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community.

Decatur joins a cutting-edge group of over 400 communities across the United States that are transforming the American landscape.

“We applaud these communities for making bicycling a safe and convenient option for transportation and recreation,” said Bill Nesper, Executive Director at the League of American Bicyclists. “We are encouraged by the growing number of leaders who see bicycling as a way to build more vibrant, healthy, sustainable and connected communities and be a part of the solution to many complex challenges faced at both the community and national levels. We look forward to continuing to work with these communities as we move closer to our mission of creating a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone.”
