Time to Register for Run With the Dogs!

RWTD compressedIt is time to register for the first race of 2015: Run With the Dogs!!

The Decatur Bulldog Boosters would like to let the Decatur dog-loving and running communities know of the 10th Annual Decatur Bulldog Boosters 5K “Run with the Dogs” on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 9:00 am.

The race will begin and end in front of Decatur High School and traverse a scenic, if challenging, course. The event again will feature a single 5K race where runners and dog-owners can run with (or without) their dogs.  T-shirts (once again designed by local artist Adam Pinsley and featuring “Sydney” the winner of our drawing last year), awards, and treats will be available to race participants as well as a sporty “race”-kerchief for canine participants.  Sponsorship opportunities are available for a limited time.  All proceeds go to funding the uniforms, equipment, and awards for our student-athletes at the middle and high schools.  So come on out and run off a few of those Holiday calories with Decatur and its Dogs!

This will be the first race of the New Year in the City of Decatur’s Grand Slam Fitness Challenge and will serve as the award ceremony for those dedicated Team Decatur individuals who completed the Grand Slam last year! Team Decatur participants, as well as the entire community, are invited to begin the New Year with the Run with the Dogs and complete the Grand Slam by participating in at least 3 more races throughout the year, including the KP Corporate Run. We are looking forward to seeing everyone there!!

Registration forms can be found on, or at  Follow us on Facebook at or Twitter and Instagram  @RWTD5K. Any questions can be forwarded to Bill Ainslie at

SLOW DOWN: Wednesday is International Walk & Roll to School Day!

SLOW DOWN and watch for even more children than usual walking and biking to school on Wednesday!

Children in the City of Decatur will join millions of children worldwide by participating in International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 8, 2014.

Our schools will join other Georgia schools across the state that are participating in the event.  International Walk to School Day is held each fall to remind students, parents, and communities about the many benefits of walking and biking to school.  “No matter the reason: to improve students’ physical health, to teach pedestrian safety skills, to impact air quality, to build a stronger community, or to simply have fun, any school in Georgia can find a way to participate in this event ,” said Patti Sistrunk, Georgia Safe Routes to School Resource Center Manager.  “It’s a great way to get the new school year started on the right ‘foot’!”

The City of Decatur has had an active, award winning SRTS program since 2005. The program won the 2008 Golden Shoe Award from PEDS for Pedestrian Friendly School System and the 2011 GRPA Publication Award. The Decatur SRTS program is managed by the Active Living Division with the help of the FABULOUS Parent Champions at each school. For more information on the City of Decatur program, visit

Healthy Monday: Beat Stress With Relaxing Methods

Indigestion, changes in appetite, muscle tension, problems sleeping, a racing heart, dizziness, a clenched jaw, headaches, and aches and pains are all signs of stress. Giving yourself time to pause and breathe deeply when you encounter these stress signals can help you discover their cause and reduce their impact in the future.

If you begin to notice any of these symptoms this week, slow down! Pause for a moment and focus on 10 deep breaths. Remember that most stress triggers are manageable and there are plenty of tools at your disposal.
