Bike Month Kick-off on May 1

May 1 kicks off National Bike Month. The DeKalb County cities (Stone Mountain, Tucker, Clarkston, Avondale Estates and Decatur) along the Stone Mountain PATH Trail have organized a series of events, educational programs, commuting events, and helmet promotion to encourage riders to get out and to go for a ride. The PATH provides bikers easy access to these cities downtown, businesses, neighborhoods, and parks.

The DeKalb cities will host a Bike Month Kick-off on Saturday, May 1, 2021, 10 am at Clarkston City Hall Annex, 1055 Rowland Street, Clarkson, GA. The DeKalb County cities will provide a sneak peak of the programs and events planned throughout the month. Aztec Bike Shop will bring its mobile unit to the event to repair bicycles. There will be prizes and giveaways. Covid-19 precautions and guidelines will be adhered to throughout the event including wearing masks.

Trail Etiquette: Share the Trail

With more  people using the PATH it is a good time to review trail etiquette.Let’s make sure everyone has a good ride or walk. These tips are from the League of American Bicyclists……

Courtesy

  • Respect all trail users
  • Yield to slower users
  • Obey the rules of the trail

Announce when passing

  • Use a bell, horn or voice to indicate your intention to pass
  • Warn other well in advance so you do not startle them

Yield when entering and crossing

  • Yield to traffic at places where the trail crosses the road
  • Yield to other users at trail intersections

Keep Right

  • Stay as close to the right as possible, except when passing

Pass on Left

  • Pull out only when you are sure the lane is clear
  • Allow plenty of room, about two bike lengths, before moving back to the right

Be Predictable

  • Travel in a straight line unless you are avoiding hazards or passing
  • Indicate your intention to turn or pass

Use Lights at Night

  • Most trial users will not have lights at night; use a white front and red rear light.

Do not block the trail

  • For group rides, use no more than half the trail
  • Stop and regroup completely off the trail

Decatur Bike-Pedestrian Crossing Update

photo 3As many are aware, bike and pedestrian access along the PATH trail along E. Howard has been rerouted for the last couple of months due to construction at the Trinity Triangle site.  At this time, the City of Decatur is pleased to announce that bike and pedestrian access will be restored to this corridor with a new crossing on E. Trinity Place.

Here’s how it works:  The new crossing is located between the construction site (west) and the triangle where N. Candler Street meets E. Howard (east). Look for the pedestrian crossing beacon and the street paint. Cyclists and pedestrians traveling east on the PATH  Trail or north across E. College Avenue may now cross E. Trinity Place at a new temporary crossing. Cyclists and pedestrians traveling west across E. Trinity Place may now safely make their way across E. College Avenue or west on the PATH Trail.

Be careful! The crossing is well marked, but since it is a new location a bit closer to the railroad crossing, all cyclists, pedestrians and motorists should exercise caution.

The Decatur Police Department and Public Works Department will monitor use of the crossing. Updates will be provided as the project continues. This bike and pedestrian access is considered temporary because use of the new sidewalk is subject to construction phasing at the Trinity Triangle site through 2015.
