Painting the Logo

The painters have been busy applying the City of Decatur logo and the lines to the renovated basketball court at the Recreation Center. It was rather interesting to watch the process. They put down the tape for the lines and tape a stencil to the floor and then hand paint it with tiny rollers. After the paint dries, they will  tape down another stencil to fill in the black lines.

They sure have a steady hand!

Decatur Active Living and Children and Youth Services staff will begin moving back into the renovated Decatur Recreation Center next week. The building is almost complete and we are very excited. Please bear with us next week as there may be some telephone and internet outages as we transition back.

Animal Crackers and regular Active Living programming will continue at Beacon Hill Center through the end of January while the gym and multi-use studio floors are completed and the final touches are added to the building.

Programming will move back to Decatur Recreation Center beginning February 4th. However, the lobby area and front desk will be open during January to serve you. Drop by to register or pay for classes, or to pick up information.

We look forward to having the publci back in the building and will be holding an open house later this Winter.

Stay tuned for updates and have a very happy and safe New Year!

Healthy Monday: Avoid Deprivation Disaster

nav_logo_hm[1]Don’t try to abstain from your guilty pleasures during the holidays! Learning how to balance your favorite foods will help you maintain your weight without feeling cheated. The key is portions: reduce your serving size of calorie-dense foods and fill your plate with high fiber fruits, veggies, beans and whole grains.

Enjoy a tempting food this week by planning ahead and keeping portions small. You can easily mix vegetables in with your favorite entree, start your meal with a large salad or add fruit to a bite or two of your favorite dessert. Take time this Monday to brainstorm solutions for your next party or get together.

Herb Does It Again!

herb

A BIG THANK YOU goes Herb Chereck, owner of Decatur Package Store on Clairemont Avenue. Herb has just donated $900 to the Mary Miller Decatur Youth Fund. Herb recently donated over $1000 to the Youth Fund at the annual DBA Holiday Meeting with proceeds from the Decatur Wine Festival raffle.

This recent donation comes from a great idea of Herb’s. Each year he receives two bottles of Van Winkle Bourbon. Evidently this bourbon is eagerly awaited by many, so Herb decided the fair way to get it to his customers was to have a silent auction. Van Winkle Bourbon must be really good, as this year’s auction raised $900!

Thanks to the generosity of Herb and others like him, the Mary Miller Decatur Youth Fund is able to fund scholarships for After School programs, camps and sports for many children in Decatur who otherwise might not have been able to attend.

For more information on the Decatur Youth Fund, or to donate (yes, it is tax deductible) click here. Be sure to designate that the donation is for the Youth Fund in the comment section.

Thanks again to Herb, and be sure to stop by and say hello to Herb as you shop for your holiday goodies.

Have a happy and active holiday season in Decatur!

Healthy Monday: Strengthen Your Support System

logo-healthy_monday

Quality social relationships can reduce stress and help you lead a more fulfilling life. Close family ties or friendships may also reduce physical manifestations of stress that can disrupt digestion, insulin regulation, and your immune system. The best part of all is that social support will benefit your loved one as well!

Research shows that the quality of the connection matters for stress reduction, so take some time to strengthen your most important relationships this week! Give an old friend a call, or build upon budding friendship by scheduling a fun activity.

What are your favorite holiday songs to exercise to?  I know my list would have to include some of the songs from The Temptations Christmas Album.

We found this play list for runners (or walkers or just listening!):

Whatever you listen to, remember that exercising over the holidays will not only help you destress, but might also help fight off  holiday weight gain.

Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree….

Thanks to Girl Scout Troop 28433 for decorating the Christmas Tree at Decatur Active Living again this year. The girls have been decorating our tree for six years! They make the ornaments and each year create a new one to add to the collection. The ornaments over the years have grown in sophistication, and so have the girls!

Healthy Monday: Clean, Separate, Cook, Chill

logo-healthy_mondayThe four components to keeping food safe are clean, separate, cook, chill. Make sure to clean work surfaces, utensils, appliances, your hands and food completely before working with them. Separate raw meats, poultry, fish, and their juices from other food. Clean cutting boards, serving trays, hands, and utensils after they’ve been in contact with raw meats. Always cook food to the specified temperature and safely store leftovers.

Check that your refrigerator and freezer are set to the proper temperatures this Monday (refrigerator should be below 40°F and freezer below 0°F). Be aware of your kitchen practices for the rest of the week- make sure you are keeping raw foods separated and washing surfaces and cooking equipment thoroughly.
