Healthy Monday: Get Your Game On

A work-out doesn’t have to feel like work! People who engage in entertaining, social activity are more likely to stick to it long term, so add some fun to your fitness. Fly a kite, dance around the room, start a family football game or play a back-yard game of catch; anything to get moving!

Stay fit this week by coming up with two entertaining ways to exercise. Try recruiting friends, family and coworkers, or check out listings for intramural sports at your local community center, college or place of worship. Include outdoor activity on Halloween for some seasonal fun!

Healthy Monday: Cover Wholes in Your Diet

Whole grains are an extremely important part of a healthy diet. Rich in dietary fiber, complex carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, phytochemicals and (in some cases) omega-3 fatty acids, whole grains provide numerous benefits over refined grains that have been stripped of these nutrients. There is even evidence that whole grains may reduce your risk of heart disease, type II diabetes and obesity!

Try switching over to at least one whole grain bread, cereal or pasta this week. Be wary though of tricky packaging: if you see the word “whole” in front of the first ingredient on the nutrition label you’re getting the real deal.

How to Trigger a Traffic Light

Has anyone tried this and does it work?  Would love to hear feedback. I am going to try it this weekend.

Sunday in the Garden and More from Woodlands Garden

Ruby Bock shares all the fun activities at  Woodlands this weekend. Take a stroll or ride your bicycle over to the Garden for opportunities to have fun in the great fall weather.

Sunday in the Garden with Musical Surprises

This coming Sunday, October 21, 2-4pm, we’re quite pleased to welcome, for the first time, Allison Adams and Friends. Allison is a songwriter, singer, guitarist, mandolinist, ukulelist, and concertinist who has been making music on Atlanta’s acoustic scene for more than a decade. Her debut solo release, Redbud Winter, won her a slot as a finalist in the South Florida Folk Festival Singer-Songwriter Competition in 2008, and these days she is hard at work recording her second CD, The Strawberry Girls. Allison’s music is influenced by sounds she heard growing up in Rabun County, from local bluegrass and traditional music and a lot of southern rock, to her father’s Grandpa Jones albums and her mother’s The Sound of Music soundtrack.

On October 28, for the grand finale of the musical season, we look forward to hearing Danny Feig-Sandoval and Friends. Danny seems to have a lot of them – friends, that is – and we hear that they’re working up a good show.  Details will be announced next week.

Sunday, October 21 – 4:30-6pm – Guided Autumn Stroll and Tree Identification

Woodlands has again partnered with the Wylde Center to offer a special class: Robby Astrove, environmental educator, native plant enthusiast and park ranger at Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve, will lead a walk through Woodlands under the changing fall canopy. We’ll learn to identify trees and shrubs, and Robby will tell us some stories about some of his favorite plants.
