City of Decatur Staff Attend LEAD

Toni Dixon, Fire Chief and Gregory White, Acting Living Director had the opportunity to attend LEAD (Leading, Educating and Developing) at the University of Virginia last week. This was a week long training of intensive and interactive executive and organizational development.

The major areas of focus during the week of LEAD include leadership styles and team building with the use and development of the Myers Brigg Type Indicator, management strategies within the organization, creative management, communication skills, and the development of action plans.

The University of Virginia , founded by Thomas Jefferson, enjoys the opportunity to highlight the Jeffersonian tradition and ideals.  Pictured below Toni Dixon, fire chief during the graduation of LEAD.

“Spring” Into Action!

From the Amercian Heart Association:

Bring on the warm weather, sunny days and green grass – spring is here! That means it’s the perfect time to break out of your winter hibernation and enjoy outdoor physical activity. Check out these tips for getting active this spring:

  • Start! Walking: Now that the days are longer and the weather is warmer, evenings are a great time to take a walk after dinner or work. Grab your dog and the kids and enjoy the new season.
  • Be a Kid:  Grab a flying disk, jump rope, ball or roller skates and hit the park. Physical activity should be fun – partner up with a friend or loved one and learn some new tricks!
  • Go Team! Spring is when lots of team sports start. Join a team at your community center or organize a neighborhood team. It’s a great way to make some new friends and be good to your heart!
  • Lighten Up: Warmer weather means wearing lighter fabrics and fewer layers. Breathable fabric is best; it wicks sweat away from your body so you can stay cool. Drink lots of water, too!

Get a free Walking Route Ap for your Android!

Now you can create, find and track walking paths anytime, anywhere with the American Heart Association Walking Paths App. And the best part is, it’s FREE!  The app is available now for Android-based phones and will be available in May on iTunes. To find the app on your phone, search “American Heart Association Walking Paths” in the Android Market or App Store.

No Android? Check our www.mapmywalk.com or www.mapmyrun.com to create your own walking and/or running maps.

April is Pedestrian Safety Month

Did you know…

that crosswalks exist at any public street intersection, whether marked with paint or unmarked.

Remember at any crosswalks – whether marked with paint or unmarked – drivers must:

  • Stop and remain stopped for pedestrians until they have cleared the lane in which you are traveling (or into which you are turning) and the next lane.
  • Stop and remain stopped for students as you are directed by a crossing guard.
  • Stop and remain stopped for a blind pedestrian using a white cane or a guide dog until the pedestrian is completely across the roadway.

Walking Tour Number 6

Yesterday I mentioned the City’s Walking Tours brochure which inspired me to take a walk with a co-worker today during lunch. We did Tour no.6, a 2 mile walk that began and ended at the Bandstand on the Square. We walked down Clairemont, cut through the Wilton Drive neighborhood, and ended by heading east up Ponce. The spring flowers were beautiful, so happy I had brought along a camera. We stopped to pick up a lunch to-go from Jimmy John’s which was handily on the route! I thought you might enjoy some of the spring scenery we passed.

Decatur Cemetery

Take a walk through the Decatur Cemetery and the trail in adjoining Glenlake Park. Coming soon are signs that define the walk and let you know how many steps you walked.

The race takes place on Saturday, April 22 and is an evening event. There will be apizza party and music after the race, which begins and ends at Agnes Scott College.

The annual Easter Egg Hunt on the Old Courthouse Square will be held on Saturday, April 16th. The Easter Bunny arrives at 10:30am and the hunt begins at 11am. Do not be late- seriously- all the candy is gone by 11:05am! The free community event is sponsored by the Decatur Business Association.

Congratulations to our Winning Water Station!

As you may know, the City of Decatur hosts two water stations for the Publix Marathon. Thanks to our wonderful volunteers Laura Moore and Michael Harbin for coordinating these each year. I am not sure how they do it, but they convince a lot of their friends and neighbors to get up before dawn on Sunday morning to hand out water and other refreshments to the runners.

This year, the Water Station in downtown Decatur won first place – voted on by the runners. Clay of FleetFeet organized a large group to join them and they handed out orange slices.

Way to go Decatur!

Clay and MIchael cheer the runners on!
