Peter McDonald (Active Living Participant/DHS Class of 2008) Student Commencement Speaker at UGA Spring Ceremony

On Friday, May 11th, at the 2012 Spring Commencement ceremony at UGA before 50,000 graduating seniors, families, faculty and the Govenor of Georgia, Active Living’s/DHS’s own Peter J. McDonald was the Student Commencement Speaker.

Peter played soccer for many years at Decatur Active Living and his mother Jill coached for several years in the fall and spring seasons.  Peter graduated summa cum laude from the UGA Honors Program, presented an eloquent and inspiring talk, and gave a huge shout-out to his hometown of Decatur (with many loud responses from the crowd!), referring to his work at Children and Youth Services summer camp and the difference that can be made for at-risk youth.

Congratulations to Peter McDonald and his family. Decatur is proud of you and best wishes as you prepare to reach new milestones in life.

Healthy Monday: Mend your Mood with Music

There’s no doubt that music and mood are closely related- that’s why lullabies exist! Listening to happy, upbeat tunes tends to make you more cheerful than when you listen to slow, sad music.  Your emotional state plays a big role in how you perceive the world, so your favorite songs may actually help you have a more positive day.

Set yourself up for a better week this Monday by composing a CD or playlist of music that makes you smile or feel happy.  Listen to your tunes if you feel blue, start stressing or just want to enjoy

Healthy Monday: There’s More to Fit than Fat

Just because a food is branded as “low-fat” or “fat free” does not necessarily mean it’s a healthy choice.  Check food labels to make sure fat hasn’t been replaced by unnecessary sugar, calories and artifiical flavorings.  When in doubt, opt for whole foods instead.
