It’s School Bus Safety Week!

imagesOctober 19-23 is National School Bus Safety Week. Be sure to take a few minutes to review the tips below, for both bus riders and car drivers. Let’s keep all of our children safe!

The Hard Facts

School buses are the safest mode of motorized transportation for getting children to and from school, but injuries can occur if kids are not careful and aware when getting on and off the bus.

Top Tips

  • Walk with your kids to the bus stop and wait with them until it arrives. Tell kids to stand at least three giant steps back from the curb as the bus approaches and board the bus one at a time.
  • Teach kids to wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before getting off and never to walk behind the bus.
  • If your child needs to cross the street after exiting the bus, he or she should take five giant steps in front of the bus, make eye contact with the bus driver and cross when the driver indicates it’s safe. Teach kids to look left, right and left again before crossing the street.
  • Instruct younger kids to use handrails when boarding or exiting the bus. Be careful of straps or drawstrings that could get caught in the door. If your children drop something, they should tell the bus driver and make sure the bus driver is able to see them before they pick it up.
  • Drivers should always follow the speed limit and slow down in school zones and near bus stops. Remember to stay alert and look for kids who may be trying to get to or from the school bus.
  • Slow down and stop if you’re driving near a school bus that is flashing yellow or red lights. This means the bus is either preparing to stop (yellow) or already stopped (red), and children are getting on or off.

Decatur City Schools are back in session and thousands of children will be walking and biking to school. Please make sure the sidewalk in front of your property is cleared of debris and that the bushes are cut back for a clear sight line. Make sure cars can see the children approaching cross streets on their walk or bike ride to school.

Be sure to drive slowly and be on the lookout for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Oakhurst Elementary School is GA SRTS Partner of the Year!

2014-05-24 001 005Oakhurst Elementary School was selected as the 2015 Georgia Safe Routes to School Resource Center’s Partner of the Year for the Metro Atlanta Area. Winners of this award are chosen based on the progress of their SRTS programs during the past year in getting more students to walk and bike to school and increasing the awareness of SRTS within its community. The Georgia Safe Routes to School Resource Center has recognized outstanding partners with the Partner of the Year Award since 2011. Clairemont Elementary won the award in 2013 and Renfroe Middle School won in 2014.

Under the leadership of Parent Champion Heather Tell, Oakhurst Elementary students, staff, teachers, and parents have embraced the Safe Routes to School program as part of the core culture of the school. Over 60% of students regularly walk and bike to school—the highest percentage of any City of Decatur school—and they constantly strive to improve that number. The school sponsors a monthly Walk and Roll to School Day celebration, with fun themes and prizes to encourage participation, donations from local businesses, and bicycle bells for kids. Safety tips are included in the school’s weekly newsletter, and all 450 students learn basic bike safety at the annual Fall Health and Wellness Festival. With a strong School Leadership Team and the support of the City of Decatur Active Living, the Decatur Police Department, the Georgia SRTS Outreach Coordinator, and City of Decatur schools, Oakhurst is an enthusiastic and highly successful Partner in the SRTS program.

Commuter Dude Reports on the Westchester Slowdown

city folksLast month the Westchester Neighborhood partnered with the  City of Decatur to do a morning “slow down”. There have been way too many cars cutting through the neighborhood to beat the traffic on Scott Boulevard. The cars speed through and tend to not stop at the stop signs. So the neighbors got together to bring awareness to the problem.

Georgia Walk & Roll to School Day is March 4

The City of Decatur will be participating in GA Walk & Roll to School Day on Wednesday, March 4. In 2014 wehad almost 50% of our children participate in this annual event, even though it was a very cold day!

GA Walk & Roll Day is part of the state’s Safe Routes to School program and all of our elementary schools, Renfroe Middle School, St Thomas More School and College Heights all take part. Children take part in “walking school buses” and bike trains” with parents and learn how much fun it is to walk to school as well as get some exercise.

Decatur has had an active SRTS prgoram since 2005. During the 2008-2009 nschool year, the Decatur Active LIving Division took on the management and development of Decatur’s program.

Special thanks to all the wonderful Parent School Champions who make this possible by volunteering their time, energy and creativity to make this a success!

Thanks to our Crossing Guards!

Crossing guards 2014 3

Thanks to our wonderful Crossing Guards who were honored this morning at the Decatur Police Department. These folks are out there every morning in all kinds of weather with smiles on their faces. They greet us and our children as they help them get to school safely. They wave at drivers and passersby giving them a smile to start their day.

Have YOU thanked a Crossing Guard this week?
