Jason and Mark at COREBODY Decatur have offered to award the top ten finishers on Team Decatur with a free one month membership to the gym. Located south of downtown Decatur, COREBODY is a state of the art gym with a casual, neighborhood feel. If you win the membership, you can stop by and take one of my yoga classes, or check out the BodyPump or Boot Camp classes. Even if you don’t win, you can pay a small drop in fee to check it out.

Team Decatur News

Congratulations to Team Decatur member Pat Godbee who ran the Peachtree Road Race on the 4th of July. Pat joined Team Decatur last year to be a part of the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk held in downtown Decatur. She was one of 143 members. This year our goal is to have at least 250 on the team. Have you signed up yet?

You do not have to be a runner to join-we have many members who are just starting out with their walking and/or running programs. We will begin our training walks and runs on July 18 as part of the eight week training program offered to those who register for the event. Runs and walks are held in various places in Decatur thanks to our local running stores and Decatur Active Living, who will schedule and lead them.

I got an email the other day from Team Decatur member, Al Natanagara who wanted us to know how much participating in the program has helped him:

“I plan on completing all six Team Decatur Challenge races this year. I only began running last June, and when I read about the challenge, it became a major motivation to develop a routine. Since then, I’ve lost 65 pounds, my blood pressure has dropped to healthy levels, and I feel 20 years younger. My two young daughters are proud Decatur-ites who cheer me on at every finish line–that’s a sight worth working hard for. ”

Whether you want to get fit, improve your fitness level, or just have fun and get to know new Decaturites,  join us for the training and the September Kaiser Permanente Run/Walk and Fitness Program. To get more information on the KP and to register, click here. Be sure to select Team Deatur as your team.

Team Members receive a Team Decatur t-shirt to wear to the event and gather before and after the “race” in our team tent.

Do you have a photo or yourself in your TD shirt from the Peachtree? Send it to cheryl.burnette@decaturga.com and we will post it.

Have You Signed Up for Team Decatur Yet?

Our Team Decatur group is growing, and we want YOU to sign up too! Part of the program is an eight week training program that will begin on July 18th. Former Olympian Jeff Gallaway will send fitness tips for your training and the City of Decatur will partner with local fitness businesses to provide free walks and runs to get you ready for the KP 5K on September 8.

Registration for the KP Corporate Run Walk is $25, and you will receive your race number, a Team Decatur t-shirt to wear in the race, a KP Run/Walk shirt when you complete the race, and you will also be invited to join us in the offical Team Tent before and after the race. To register, click here. Be sure to register by July 30 to guarantee a Team Decatur shirt- we will be ordering them in early August.

The metro wide kick-off for the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Program will be held on the Decatur Square on Thursday, July 28th from 6-8pm. Mark your calendar so you won’t miss meeting Jeff, Mayor Bill Floyd and hear the wonderful sounds of singer/songwriter Morgan Rowe. The event will also include a Fitness Expo where you can learn more about keeping your mind and body in tipitop shape. Participants will also be given a free ticket for drawings that will be held throughout the evening. For more information, cheryl.burnette@decaturga.com or 678-553-6541.

Walking to Remember

From the New York Times:

In healthy adults, the hippocampus — a part of the brain important to the formation of memories — begins to atrophy around 55 or 60. Now psychologists are suggesting that the hippocampus can be modestly expanded, and memory improved, by nothing more than regular walking.

Need more reasons to start walking? Join the group from Team Decatur and compete in the Team Decatur Fitness Challenge: run or walk three local races and the KP Corporate Run/Walk in September and hit a “Grand Slam”! In May, Decatur Active Living will present “Walk For Lunch”. What a great way to help your memory, get more fit and meet new friends.

Help Someone Get Into the Fitness Habit

The More The Merrier — Help a Friend/Co-Worker/Relative Get Started

By Olympian Jeff Galloway, founder of Phidippides

“Now’s a great time to help someone get into a fitness habit.  Both of you will benefit.  Not only will you help him/her to manage attitude, improve vitality, release stress and think more clearly, but studies show that helping others bestows a boost to the immune system. Even if the exerciser doesn’t lose an ounce, there is an enhancement to the spirit that improves the quality of life for both of you.

When tense, stressed or un-motivated family members or co-workers exercise, they tend to be more positive and more humane afterward. Do you want your kids to do their best in school? Studies show that kids who exercise regularly do better in school and in life. Here are a few tips that have helped to improve motivation and success.”

Start getting fit now so you will be ready to join Team Decatur for the Kaiser Permanente Run/Walk on September 8th. Team Decatur members have been active already this year; 14 participated in the Decatur Booster Club “Run With the Dogs” on January 8 and are  training for the Decatur Education Foundation “Tour de Catur” on March 28th. Don’t be left out- come on out and run or walk your way to a fit 2011! You may want to run three local Decatur races and join us for the KP Run/walk to “hit” a fitness Grand Slam!
