Are You a Team Decatur Grand Slam Champion?

To all those walkers and runners out there who participated in Team Decatur in 2012:

Did you participate in three of the participating Grand Slam Run/Walks and the KP Corporate Run/Walk in September? If the answer is YES, then you are a Grand Slam Fitness Champion!! Congratulations!!

All you have to do is fill out the form located here and send it to Cheryl and you will receive an award at the annual Run With the Dogs race to be held on January 12th. We must have the form and information no later than November 30 as we will be ordering your great prize!

Participating race/events in 2012  were: 
Run With the Dogs in January
Tour deCatur in March
Take Back the Night in April
KP Corporate Run/Walk in September**  (this is mandatory)
Oakhurst Arts Run in October
Run for Justice in November
One month of Walk for Lunch

Didn’t make it this year? No fear- we will be offering the challenge again in 2013 with a couple of new run/walks to choose from. Make plans to start 2013 on the right foot  at the Run With the Dogs on January 12th.

Run for Justice November 10

Atlanta Legal Aid Society will hold its annual Run For Justice on Saturday, November 10. The 5k race is held in Oakhurst and begins at One Step at a Time, 650 East Lake Drive in Decatur.  Walk up registration begins at 7:45am and the run/walk starts promptly at 9 am.

The Run for Justice is a qualiflying run/walk event in the Team Decatur Grand  Slam Fitness Challenge.

October 20 Fun Run/Walk and FREE Bootcamp for Team Decatur Members

 Meet fellow walkers and runners at Fleet Feet for a 8:30am run/walk on October 20th at 8:30, then join our friends at Operation Boot Camp for a 30 minute cross training workout. They’ve crafted a workout just for us focusing on core strength and joint stabilization.  All fitness levels are welcome and encouraged to come!  The Boot Camp instructor is JoJo.  After your workout join friends to visit at some of the surrounding establishments such as Dancing Goats or The Marlay.

 Fleet Feet is located at 431 E Ponce de Leon Ave in Decatur. Bring your friends; everyone is welcome. Be sure to wear your Team Decatur shirt!

Olympic Tribute and Celebration On the Decatur Square- Dee Dee Trotter and Angelo Taylor

Celebrate two remarkable DeKalb Olympians- Dee Dee Trotter, bronze winner in the 400m and Angelo Taylor, silver medal winner in the 4 x 400 relay.  Both attend school in DeKalb County- Dee Dee Trotter (Cedar Grove) and Angelo Taylor (Southwest DeKalb). Angelo Taylor has been to four Olympics- 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012. DeKalb County Chief Executive Officer Burrell Ellis and the DeKalb County Commissioners invite everyone to a special “Olympic Celebration”.

Decatur to get New Lights for Playing Fields

The softball and baseball fields at Decatur’s McKoy and Oakhurst Parks will get new lighting systems, with construction expected to start Oct.1 and take about three months.  Deputy City Manager Hugh Saxon said the new lights  will be 15 percent more efficient and spread far less glare to surrounding neighborhoods.  The system will be installed by Daveco Electrical of Boynton Beach, Florida, which constructed lights for the Florida Marlins stadium and the Boston Red Sox spring training facility.  The current McKoy and Oakhurst lights are more than 50 years old.

Tune Up for the KP: Run For the Park

Looking for a fun way to “tune up” for the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk 5K in September? Join Adams Realtors at the Run for the Park on Saturday, August 25 at 8am.

The proceeds from the  10th Annual Adams Realtors Run for the Park will go to preserve and enhance Grant Park. The race is a USA Track & Field certified course and a Peachtree Race Qualifier. It’s A Team Decatur Social Night at UJoint!

Team Decatur: Time to Train

Michelle from Decatur Jazzercise kept us moving and smiling!

Yesterday’s Team Decatur and Get Active! Atlanta Kickoff Event was so much fun! We did Jazzercise, Afridancercise, and NIA Dance. There was a lot of information on staying fit and healthy in the Health Expo, and we tried to stay cool after all this exercise by standing by the Fire Department’s Misting Trailer.

Time to Train!
So, now it is time to start training for the Kaiser Permanente Corporate 5K in September. A few of us began this morning wtih a brisk walk around Decatur beginning at Beacon Hill Center.  Join us for one or all of the FREE walk or run training sessions: visit www.decaturga.com/teamdecatur for the training schedule.

Mayor Bill Floyd and Jeff Galloway welcomed attendees and talked about the importance of staying fit and healthy.

Win a Weekend Beach Retreat with Olympic Runner Jeff Galloway!

Decatur Active Living invites you to the Get Active! Atlanta Kickoff hosted by Team Decatur on Tuesday, July 24th from 6-8pm in Harmony Park. The event kicks off the eight week training program to prepare runners and walkers for the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk 5K to be held on September 13th in downtown Atlanta. Team Decatur is proud to host the Kickoff Event and enter a team for the third year in a row.

One lucky attendee will win a Beach Retreat with Olympic Runner Jeff Galloway. The winner will spend a weekend with a small group of walkers and runners in Santa Rose Beach on the Florida Panhandle, near Destin. The gift certificate covers tuition and a room (Value $425).

Subjects the retreat covers include fat-burning, staying motivated, increasing speed and endurance, training for a variety of race lengths, injury prevention and more. All retreat participants receive personalized running/walking evaluation from Mr. Galloway, a running book, individual attention and some meals.

How to win? Come to the Get Active! Atlanta Kickoff hosted and enter the FREE drawing.  The winning name will be drawn during the event. In order to enter the drawing you must have registered for Team Decatur.
