Reflecting on Active Living’s Holiday Gift Giveaway

Over the holiday break, our Youth and Teens Programs were able to give gifts to over 60 families in the community. A massive THANK YOU to Wal-Mart, Thumbs Up Diner, and Southwest DeKalb High School for graciously donating and putting smiles on our kids faces. We are always so grateful for our rockstar staff for exceeding expectations and ensuring that we are providing the best services for our community.
Youth Basketball Dribbles On

Opening weekend of Youth Basketball shoots and scores! Last weekend Decatur Active Living kicked off our Youth Basketball season after a two year hiatus. It was great to hear the gyms filled with the dribbling of basketballs and whistles blown. A huge shout out and thank you to Stacy Green, Athletic Program Supervisor, and her team who ensured the safety of players, staff, and spectators. Can’t wait to see you on the court!
Decatur Active Living’s Updated & Modified Schedules

Due to the rise in COVID-19 cases, Decatur Active Living’s indoor programs and activities have been suspended until Monday, January 10, at Decatur Recreation Center and Ebster Recreation Center.
Basketball games will be played this week so be sure to check out the updated schedules on QuickScores. The following modifications will be followed to ensure the safety of our patrons and staff:
- Two spectators per player allowed.
- Players, Coaches, and Spectators must leave the gym immediately following their game.
- Players, Coaches, and Spectators will enter through the front door and exit through the side doors.
- Players and Spectators for upcoming games will have to wait until the gym is cleared before entering.
- Spectators, Coaches, and Staff are required to wear a mask at all times.
- Players are required to wear a mask while sitting on the bench, however, wearing mask while playing is optional.
- Players, Coaches, and Spectators must not congregate in the Lobby or stand in doorways.

Decatur Active Living’s Holiday Hours

Happy Holidays to all! Decatur Active Living facilities and programs will have a modified schedule until the New Year.
Decatur Recreation Center and Ebster Recreation Center will close on Thursday, December 23 at 2:00 PM through Monday, January 3.
Glenlake Tennis Center will be closed on December 24 and December 25 as well as December 31 and January 1. All other days have normal business hours.
Oakhurst Indoor Pool will have normal business hours except for the following dates:
- Friday, December 23: 6:00 AM – 3:00 PM
- December 24 and 25: Closed for Christmas
- Sunday, December 26: 12:00 PM (noon) – 5:00 PM
- Friday, December 31: 6:00 AM – 2:00 pm
- January 1: Closed on New Years Day
- Sunday, January 2: 12:00 PM (noon) – 5:00 PM

National 4-H Congress Service Project selects McKoy Park

Decatur Active Living hosted 45 high school students and 8 adults from across the country for the 4H National Congress Work Day in Decatur at McKoy Park. Students worked really hard to make a difference at the park raking leaves, painting doors, pulling ivy and cleaned park signs. National 4-H Congress is a premiere nation-wide opportunity for 4-H members across America. National 4-H Congress is a five-day event that engages high school-aged 4-H members in leadership, citizenship, global awareness, and inclusion.
City of Decatur named the first Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community in Georgia by the League of American Bicyclists!

The City of Decatur is now a League of American Bicyclists recognized Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC)!
Earlier this year, Decatur applied for the League of American Bicyclists’ prestigious Bicycle Friendly Community award. It has long been a goal of the City of Decatur to be a recognized leader for the work our transportation professionals and local citizens have put in over the years to make our community more accessible by bike. Today, we’re proud to be part of the nearly 500 communities across the United States that are transforming America one Bicycle Friendly Community at a time.
“Biking has the power to transform our nation economically, environmentally and socially and it’s so important that communities like Decatur have laid the groundwork over several years to make biking a safe, accessible option for all. With many more Americans turning to biking as a fun way to get outdoors and as a necessary transportation option, we must keep the momentum to build a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone going,” said Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. “This Bicycle Friendly Community award is the culmination of years of work put in by Decatur and its citizen advocates for better biking. This award round, Decatur joins 57 new and renewing Bicycle Friendly Communities in the movement toward healthier, more sustainable and connected places. As we gear up for what we hope to be a transformational new year for biking investment, we’re grateful that Decatur and communities like it are pedaling alongside us to power the better bicycling movement.”
People across our community are biking more than ever, for commuting to essential jobs, trips to the store, and for recreation. The Silver-level BFC award recognizes Decatur’s commitment to improving conditions for all people who bike through investments in bike education programs, bike events that promote and encourage people to choose biking, pro-bike policies, and bike infrastructure. We can’t wait for future events where we can all celebrate this award and our achievements for building a better community together.

The City of Decatur applied to develop the Atlanta region’s second City Agriculture Plan in partnership with Food Well Alliance and the Atlanta Regional Commission and has been chosen to move forward with the next step of the selection process – holding a Community Food Forum for Decatur residents. The Community Food Forum is an opportunity for residents to learn more about the City Agriculture Plan process, voice their support for a strong local food system, and ask questions.
The City Agriculture Plan program aims to bring local governments together with their communities to create plans incorporating urban agriculture and local food into the next phase of cities’ development. Food Well Alliance and the Atlanta Regional Commission will select one city to develop a City Agriculture Plan in 2022. The Community Food Forums will inform the selection process by assessing the readiness and enthusiasm of each city to participate in the comprehensive and inclusive planning process.
All City of Decatur residents are encouraged to reflect on how support for local growers and increased access to local food and agricultural goods can enhance their vision for the City of Decatur’s growth and attend the forum to learn more. Register for the Forum here!
