 “A beautiful bouquet of spring flowers in the lounge reminded teachers of the allure of the season on Wednesday, April 3, when the Clairemont Crew did a great job walking, rolling, and collecting Pretty Spring Flowers—the theme of our Walk&Roll to School Day. The weather was perfect. Even the birds seemed happy to see so many smiling, walking children. Mark your calendars and join us in two weeks, Wednesday, April 17, when we’ll see if the children can whistle as happy a song as the birds do! Remember: Look both ways; then look again.”

Renfroe Has Great Turnout for GA Walk & Roll to School Day

As you may know, yesterday was the Annual GA Walk & Roll to School Day and even though the weather was FREEZING 245 students at Renfroe Middle School participated. Children were greeted at school by parents and given pencils, snack bars and a raffle ticket for a chance to win a special prize.

 We know it was freezing because the water dripping out of the water cooler formed an icicle!

Not only did a great number of students walk and/or bicycle to school, three teachers and principal Mr. Thomas rode their bikes.

Wednesday will be a special day in Georgia.

Wednesday March 6th is Georgia Walk and Roll to School Day and Governor Deal has also proclaimed it Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.

City Schools of Decatur and Decatur Active Living coordinate to celebrate GA Walk & Roll to School Day. Children are encouraged to walk or bicycle to school and parent Champions from each school organize walking school buses and bike trains to their school. Approximately 30% of our children walk or bicycle to school on a regular basis and on special Walk & Roll Days that number increases a lot. This year, each school will count the number of children who participate on Wednesday and the school with the highest number will receive a special “Golden Shoe” from the GA Safe Routes to School Resource Center.

We encourage everyone in Decatur to show appreciation for our School Crossing Guards. The SRTS committee has a special gift for them and we encouraging children and parents to make them a card or bring them a flower, or show your appreciation in some way. Our Crossing Guards get up early in all kinds of weather to make sure that the children arrive at school safely. They wave and smile at passer-bys and help bring a little sunshine into all of our days.

Be sure to give them a wave, a smile and a big THANK YOU on Wednesday!

Walk, Roll and Recycle at Clairemont Elementary

Peter Wakefield, Parent School Champion with the Safe Routes to School Program at Clairemont Elementary shared some fun news.

Our natural world and our neighborhood must be a lot cleaner after yesterday’s Recycle Walk&Roll. The Clairemont Crew filled up two recycling bins with litter they found along the way. And, to quote Cole Westing, “It was awesome!” Great job, Clairemont Crew. Thanks again to Ben Kaplan for the recycling idea. Their next Walk & Roll to School Day is Wednesday, March 6, which is also Georgia Walk & Roll to School Day. Clairemont will compete against other Decatur schools for the Ruby Slipper Trophy for having the most walkers and rollers.

It is so great that the children in the community are concerned about recycling and coming up with ideas on their own. Congratulations to Ben for his idea and for the school community for encouraging creativity.

Decatur Local Clarence Scott Inducted into the 2012 Cleveland Browns Legends

Decatur native, Clarence Scott was recently inducted into the Cleveland Browns Legends in recognition of his 13-year career with the Browns.   Scott, 63 played fro the Browns from 1971 to 1983, appearing in 186 games (178 straight).  He recorded 39 career interceptions, the third most in club history, and helped the Browns win two division titles.  Scott, part of the last class at Decatur’s all black Trinity High School in 1967, went to Kansas State before the SEC integrated.  Scott became an All- American at Kansas State in 1970. 

The franchise created the Cleveland Browns Legends program in 2001 to honor former players who have made a major impact on the organization.  Clarence Scott was inducted into the Decatur High School Wall of Fame in 2011.

International Walk & Roll to School Day is Wednesday

International Walk & Roll to School Day will be celebrated around the world this Wednesday, October 3rd. Decatur City Schools and St. Thomas More children will be walking, bicycling, skateboarding and scooting to school to celebrate Safe Routes to School.

From the National Safe Routes to School Center:

On Wednesday, Oct. 3, thousands of students, parents and communities representing more than 3,300 schools across the United Sates will walk and bicycle to school to celebrate International Walk to School Day. This one-day event is part of an international effort to encourage more families to get out of their cars and on to their feet to enjoy the many benefits of safely walking and bicycling to school.

 “Walk to School Day continues to inspire community-grown events that celebrate health, safety and a sense of community,” said Lauren Marchetti, director of the National Center for Safe Routes to School, which serves as the coordinating agency for the event. “Often, this one-day event becomes the catalyst to larger commitments and permanent improvements that make walking and bicycling to school safer transportation options year round.”

Be on the lookout for children and their families walking and biking and be sure to slow down, watch for pedestrians in crosswalks, and maybe walk to work or school yourself!

Olympic Tribute and Celebration On the Decatur Square- Dee Dee Trotter and Angelo Taylor

Celebrate two remarkable DeKalb Olympians- Dee Dee Trotter, bronze winner in the 400m and Angelo Taylor, silver medal winner in the 4 x 400 relay.  Both attend school in DeKalb County- Dee Dee Trotter (Cedar Grove) and Angelo Taylor (Southwest DeKalb). Angelo Taylor has been to four Olympics- 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012. DeKalb County Chief Executive Officer Burrell Ellis and the DeKalb County Commissioners invite everyone to a special “Olympic Celebration”.

Decatur to get New Lights for Playing Fields

The softball and baseball fields at Decatur’s McKoy and Oakhurst Parks will get new lighting systems, with construction expected to start Oct.1 and take about three months.  Deputy City Manager Hugh Saxon said the new lights  will be 15 percent more efficient and spread far less glare to surrounding neighborhoods.  The system will be installed by Daveco Electrical of Boynton Beach, Florida, which constructed lights for the Florida Marlins stadium and the Boston Red Sox spring training facility.  The current McKoy and Oakhurst lights are more than 50 years old.
