Online registration for the Tour deCatur closes at midnight tonight! Avoid the lines on Saturday and register today (you are more likely to get a t-shirt if you register now). Decatur Recreation Center Construction Update – Enters into Week Ten

Construction at Decatur Recreation Center enters into week ten and last week 26 cubic yards of concrete was poured to began the shaping of the wall for the new multi-use room and administrative offices (Formerly the social room). While on the site I have meet several of the contractors and last week I had the opportunity to meet Timothy Jones(pictured below) who grew up in the Oakhurst comunity.  Timothy graduated from Decatur High School in 1982 and played under Carter Wilson.  Timothy Jones is a Senior Build Tech and is responsible for concrete, roofing, soil, water proofing and reinforcement.  For construction updates continue to follow the Active Living blog.

Walking track steel beams are currently being installed in the gym area.

Decatur Recreation Center Construction Update

Decatur Recreation Center construction enters into week eight and the progress is moving along.  On yesterday I visited the center and had the opportunity to watch the contractors cutting the floor so that new plumbing could be installed in the facility.  Last Friday the groundbreaking ceremony took place and city officials were excited about the demolition and progress of the project.

 

Decatur Recreation Center Groundbreaking Scheduled for Friday, February 17

Decatur Recreation Center groundbreaking is scheduled for Friday, February 17 at 9am.  Mayor Bill Floyd, City Commissioners and other City of Decatur officials will be on hand for this historical moment in Decatur.  The construction process is moving along and this week the foundations for the supports to the walking track are being dug in the gym.  

Walk For Lunch Begins March 13th

Join us for Walk For Lunch, a lunchtime walking program that begins on the Old Courthouse Square each Tuesday and Thursday beginning March 13th. This year we are extending the program to run for 12 weeks, so we will be ready to do all the local 5ks coming up. You can sign up for either 4, 8 or 12 weeks, the more you sign up for the more of a discount you get. Walkers also receive a Walk for Lunch Decatur t-shirt.

Walk For Lunch is a fitness program that employees can do during their lunch hour. It includes power walking and intervals of strength and body toning exercises. Taught by certified fitness instructors, it is a great workout for any level of exerciser.

Walk For Lunch instructors will follow a 5K walking schedule and lead 1 – 3 mile power walks from the Square. The walks will take you on scenic and sometimes historic walks through Decatur. This unique program also provides employees with the opportunity to meet other co-workers, to form lasting friendships and to help your organization thrive.

What Neighborhoods Need to Succeed at Walkability

New research from Southern California has foun that residents of neighborhoods with a central core of shops and services – a pattern typically found in older, traditional communities-walk nearly three times more often than do residents of neighborhoods whose nearest shops and services lie along a major arterial roadway, a pattern typically found in newer suburban development.  To read more:

Decatur Recreation Center Construction- Week Two

Decatur Recreation Center construction enters into week two and amazing demolition has taken place in this historic facility in the community.
