News From Woodlands

Ruby Bock writes in with News from Woodlands.

“It’s high summer and it’s hot everywhere, but it’s always shady in the woods, and that helps a little.  Come to Sunday in the Garden, July 31, 2-4pm, to stroll the trails, and stop by the Pavilion for some hot music by “The Usual Suspects”.  The band includes Leon Bass, Libby Eason, George Eckard, David Gibson and  Don Fay, on guitar, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, bass guitar, and slide guitar.  They’ll be playing folk music, a mix of some old favorites and their own original songs.  George is a great supporter of the music program at Woodlands and can often be found in the audience, enjoying the talents of other bands.  The Usual Subjects are returning for their third performance in the Pavilion.

Summer is buzzing along, with lots of action from the birds and the bees.  The elderberries are turning purple and the birds are chomping down on them; the joe-pye weed is blooming and starting to attract butterflies; and unfortunately we’ve run into a few yellow jackets along the way (but they’re not on the trails – so stay on the trails).  The Chinese parasol trees near the beginning of the trail always attract a lot of attention, and over the months visitors have asked for seedlings.  Well, they’re available now.  If you are interested in a tiny Chinese Parasol Tree (look up Firmiana simplexfor more information), call me ( 678.641.2966) and we’ll make plans for you to come get one.”

Sundays in the Garden at Woodlands

White Oak Fairies

My friend and I visited Woodlands Garden this past Sunday for their monthly “Sundays in the Garden”, held the last Sunday of each month from 2 until 4 pm. What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon!  We enjoyed the coolness of this “urban forest” ; if you didn’t know it was right next to Scott Boulevard you would think you were miles from the city.  There are paths to wander on, a creek to cross, and many of the plants and trees have identifying labels. Thanks to Ruby Bock for helping to make this a great place to visit.

This month the garden featured “Fairy Houses” and we had a lot of fun discovering them throughout the property. These little houses were so creatively designed; the artists used materials found in nature to make these treasures.

Fairy Gardens at Woodlands This Sunday!

Woodlands Garden invites the community to “Sunday in the Garden” this coming Sunday, June 26 from 2 – 4pm. Two special programs are planned.

Root Fairy Village is one of the Fairy Homes that will be on display at Woodlands.

From Ruby Bock:

“We welcome the return of guest musicians Perimeter Flutes to the Pavilion.  This local flute quartet that charmed Woodlands visitors last fall can be seen regularly performing in the Atlanta area.  The group was formed in 2005 to bring the rich cultural diversity of flute literature to audiences. Members are Kathy Farmer, Jeanne Giager, Laura Philpott, and Slava Prudchenko with accompanist Ginger Chen.

Flute music will be the perfect soundtrack for our other program this Sunday, Fairy Gardens by Skyland Trail.  Skyland Trail is a community-based nonprofit that offers hope to adults with mental illness by guiding them on the path to recovery.  Clients engaged in both art and horticulture therapy, and inspired by the magic of Woodlands Garden through regular visits, have created miniature homes and gardens alongside the paths. Fairy home building and gardening taps into the imagination and ingenuity of adults struggling with mental illness it allows individuals to celebrate the intricacies of nature while embracing their own talents and passions.”
