Run With the Dogs 2015 and Other Spots to Stay Warm

RWTDIt’s here, Run With the Dogs is this weekend. Time to bring Fido out for a group run. Keep up with the event, photos, and last-minute announcements on their RWTD facebook page.

Hope to see you out there or at one of our many locations around town for active living. Did we say many? Yep, that’s right, Decatur Recreation Center, Glenlake Tennis Center, the Solarium, and Ebster gym (opening verrrrry soon) all offer warm spaces to exercise, learn, and connect with neighbors.

And of course all the city parks and green spaces offer opportunities to keep fit, like the adult exercise equipment in the park at Glenlake, the PATH trail, and the wonderful acreage within the cemetery. As soon as it warms up, stop by and say hello to Betty the duck.

Seriously, if anyone just needs to warm up today,  pop into the recreation center.

Walking for Healthy Weight

“Don’t plead that you haven’t time to walk. Take time.” – Minta Beach

walk thereWalking is a great way to manage weight for life. Studies show that fitness, more than fatness, is a strong indicator of longevity and well-being. When you exercise regularly, eat properly, manage stress, and enjoy the support of friends and family, your weight will find its natural, healthy point. Studies show that taking 12,000 to 15,000 steps per day helps people to achieve and keep healthy weight levels.

  • Plan to walk at least four days a week.
  • Walk a minimu of 30 consecutive minutes. Work up to an hour if possible. If this is too much to begin with, start with 10 minute increments.
  • As you become more fit, increase the intensity of your walk. Try adding short bursts of greater speed.
  • Toning muscles also increases muscle mass and raises your metabolism, or the amount of calories you burn while at rest!

Healthy Monday: A New Year Every Week

smart goal setting conceptCongratulations on a full year of healthy habits!

Even if you have a ways to go on your goals, you should be proud of all your hard work. Remember that Monday is your weekly opportunity to reset your intentions, build on your progress and start again if you’ve had setbacks. Challenge yourself one week at a time and you’ll be there in no time!

Use this week to set your goals for 2015:

  • What has worked well?
  • What would you like to improve upon?
  • Write down your objectives; and

Break them down into smaller action steps that you can build upon over the year.

Healthy Monday: Avoid Deprivation Disaster

healthy monday headerDon’t try to abstain from your guilty pleasures during the holidays! Learning how to balance your favorite foods will help you maintain your weight without feeling cheated. The key is portions: reduce your serving size of calorie-dense foods and fill your plate with high fiber fruits, veggies, beans and whole grains.

Enjoy a tempting food this week by planning ahead and keeping portions small. You can easily mix vegetables in with your favorite entree, start your meal with a large salad or add fruit to a bite or two of your favorite dessert. Take time this Monday to brainstorm solutions for your next party or get together.

Decatur Bike-Pedestrian Crossing Update

photo 3As many are aware, bike and pedestrian access along the PATH trail along E. Howard has been rerouted for the last couple of months due to construction at the Trinity Triangle site.  At this time, the City of Decatur is pleased to announce that bike and pedestrian access will be restored to this corridor with a new crossing on E. Trinity Place.

Here’s how it works:  The new crossing is located between the construction site (west) and the triangle where N. Candler Street meets E. Howard (east). Look for the pedestrian crossing beacon and the street paint. Cyclists and pedestrians traveling east on the PATH  Trail or north across E. College Avenue may now cross E. Trinity Place at a new temporary crossing. Cyclists and pedestrians traveling west across E. Trinity Place may now safely make their way across E. College Avenue or west on the PATH Trail.

Be careful! The crossing is well marked, but since it is a new location a bit closer to the railroad crossing, all cyclists, pedestrians and motorists should exercise caution.

The Decatur Police Department and Public Works Department will monitor use of the crossing. Updates will be provided as the project continues. This bike and pedestrian access is considered temporary because use of the new sidewalk is subject to construction phasing at the Trinity Triangle site through 2015.
