City Schools of Decatur First Day- August 1

As the school bells ring around the City Decatur on Wednesday, August 1 remember that many of our youth walk and bike to school.  Decatur has had an active SRTS program since 2005 and keep in mind some of the safety tips2nd place poster listed below:

  1. Drivers slow down and follow the traffic rules in school zones.
  2. Use a crosswalk and obey crossing guards.
  3. Wear a helmet when riding a bike to school.
  4. Use main streets and travel in groups when walking to school.
  5. Talk about bus safety.
  6. Be smart about posting back-to-school first day pictures on your social media.
  7. Get to know the other children and parents in your neighborhood and make sure your children use the “buddy system” when walking to and from school.
  8. If you are in the downtown area notice the new blue logos “Walk Your Wheels”.

Decatur SRTS Facts:

  • Children who walk to school are better behaved and focused.
  • Decatur’s SRTS program includes all of our elementary schools as well as the ELC, the 4/5 Academy and Renfroe Middle School.
  • The City provides 33 crossing guards for our 4.5 square miles
  • Make sure you meet your SRTS Champion and get involved.

•    Be courteous
•    Know the rules of the trail you are using
•    Give a clear signal when passing
•    Be cautious and yield to crossing traffic
•    Always be predictable by riding in a straight line
•    If you are riding while it is dark, be sure to use lights
•    Only use half the width of the trail
•    Keep it clean

Riding on the Sidewalk

Riding on the sidewalk is not always the safest choice. When you are riding on the sidewalk, you also have to deal with many hazards: pedestrians, street furniture, signs, newspaper boxes, etc… These items don’t just make riding inconvenient; they also can make you invisible to drivers. It is also more difficult for cars to see you.

Please remember to be courteous and avoid bicycling on the sidewalks in the downtown Decatur pedestrian zone. The  sidewalk marking shown below designates those streets:
