Physical activity is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, but regular movement—whether it’s dance, running, tennis, or yoga—can also have an immediate impact on your mental health and well-being.
Many forms of physical activity offer physiological benefits because they trigger a series of chemicals events that help improve brain function and regulate mood. And regardless of your current level of physical fitness, there is an endless number of exercises and movements you can practice—anytime or anywhere—to help relieve stress.
Adaptable to all fitness levels, anyone can do yoga. In a typical workday, it’s normal for tension to build up in your shoulders, neck, and back. Doing a few simple yoga moves can help relieve built-up tension. Chair yoga can reduce the strain and stress on your joints, can be done in the office or at home, and is highly adjustable for all the poses.
Decatur Active Living is offering free community classes on the Old Courthouse Square during September.

Yoga is the ideal indoor-exercise. Requiring only a few square feet of space, yoga’s low-impact movements help support both the physical and mental well-being of you and your family.
What sets yoga apart from other forms of exercise is that it can be practiced by people of all different ages and fitness levels. Even with minimal experience, you’ll start feeling the benefits almost immediately, which is why a daily family yoga session is key to keeping everyone spry, stress-free, and occupied.
If you need to reduce stress at your desk, look no further than a good stretch! Throughout a typical day, it’s normal for tension to build up in our shoulders, neck, and back. Doing a few simple yoga moves can help relieve that tension – and you can do it while seated in a chair! This Monday, spend a few moments stretching your muscles and letting stress go!
The benefits of exercise as stress relief are well-documented, but it’s understandable if you can’t always get up and take a walk during a stressful day. Fortunately, you can still engage in some light physical activity without having to leave your work station or desk. Any movement is good for your body as well as your mind; it will get your blood flowing and direct more oxygen to your brain.
Yoga is relaxing. Plus, it helps stave off stress and anxiety, builds strength, improves cardiovascular health, and curbs low-back pain. Start your week moving with some yoga on Monday.
Enjoy free classes and demos, meet the practitioners, and more. It is all Free! Classes begin at 1 pm so be sure to stop on by. Click here to find out more as well as a list of the free classes.
Join Cheryl Burnette and Mamie Mabery to celebrate the first annual International Day of Yoga on the Summer Solstice. We will begin our practice at 9am on Sunday, June 21 at the Herring-Trinity Terrace (the green space between Decatur Police and Ebster Recreation Center).
Bring a mat and water. It will be warm, but we will be in the shade. Rain is not expected, but if it does rain, we will practice inside Ebster Gym.
Everyone in the community is invited to celebrate the longest day of the year with us as we offer a Summer Solstice Yoga Practice. Bring Dad along for a great start to Father’s Day. June 21 has also been proclaimed International Day of Yoga. Even if you have never done yoga, grab a mat and join us. RSVP on facebook.
