Decatur Receives Walking Superstar Award

Walking Superstars-1

The City of Decatur was honored by PEDS at the 20 Years Strong – Salute the Walking Superstars Celebration held on January 26 at the Wrecking Bar.

Decatur was among four recipients of the new Walking Superstars Award and was recognized for “Activating the Streets” through  Transit Oriented Development in the downtown area, having places and activities worth walking to as well as people friendly public spaces and for our highly successful Safe Routes to School Program. These programs and similar projects that focus on encouraging healthy, active lifestyles and support walking, cycling and public transit represent our community’s 30 year commitment to Smart Growth principles.

Midtown Alliance, Micheal Dobbins and the Livable Centers Initiative were the other recipients. Click here for more information on PEDS.

Decatur is also a Silver level Walk Friendly Community. For more information on walking in Decatur, visit

Take an Urban Walk To Stay Fit

Tackling the urban jungle can be fun while also  providing you fitness. Use the city landscape as your outdoor gym for a toning circuit walk.

  • Warm up with an easy 5 minute stroll.
  • Increase intensity for 5 minutes.
  • Find a bus stop or bench and do one set of tricep dips.
  • Do city-block intervals for the next 5 minutes. Alternate between a slower pace and a faster pace on each block.
  • Find a flight of stairs. Walk up, taking two steps at a time, pushing through your foot as if you were doing lunges. Walk down. Then repeat for one minute.
  • Perform another cycle of city-block intervals for 5 minutes.
  • Find a bench, tree or wall and perform standing pushups for one minute.
  • If energy and time permit, do one more cycle of city-clock intervals for 5 minutes.
  • Find a tree, pole or wall to support yourself and do one set of calf-raises on each leg.
  • Cool down with an easy stroll for 5 minutes.
  • Enjoy your final stretches.

Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. Listen to your body. If you begin to feel overheated, slow down the pace and drink more water. Or come on over the Dectur Recreation Center and try this walk on our indoor walking track. Treat each lap as a city block and get moving!

Walking for Healthy Weight

“Don’t plead that you haven’t time to walk. Take time.” – Minta Beach

walk thereWalking is a great way to manage weight for life. Studies show that fitness, more than fatness, is a strong indicator of longevity and well-being. When you exercise regularly, eat properly, manage stress, and enjoy the support of friends and family, your weight will find its natural, healthy point. Studies show that taking 12,000 to 15,000 steps per day helps people to achieve and keep healthy weight levels.

  • Plan to walk at least four days a week.
  • Walk a minimu of 30 consecutive minutes. Work up to an hour if possible. If this is too much to begin with, start with 10 minute increments.
  • As you become more fit, increase the intensity of your walk. Try adding short bursts of greater speed.
  • Toning muscles also increases muscle mass and raises your metabolism, or the amount of calories you burn while at rest!
